If the WR must be in an Olympic event, why did you list Ovett’s mile and two mile records?

The following dont qualify
Coe had a 1500 wr
Walker Ngeny Juantoreno. Didnt have wr in another Olympic event and the cuban had 800m gold and 800 wr
Lewis had WR in 100m
ElG had 1500m Wr
Hit this one already, ElG does qualify because he won gold in the 5000 as the 1500m WR. He never had the 5000m WR. No one ever said it doesn't count if you also win gold in the event you are the WR in.

Jazy not a top 5k runner? In 1965, he beat both Clarke and Keino in the big 5000m clash of the year.
One race. But no wr or medals in that event. Better in the shorter distance - silver in 1500 and wr for mile.

Keino. Good call. I was thinking of him. 3000 not an olympic event though.
He means the steeple.

He also has set a 5000 wr
Already mentioned. Try reading the thread.
This thread appears to be an IQ/reading comprehension test. Half haven't understood the question; half didn't read it - or the other comments.

It doesn’t help that the question, as originally worded, isn’t actually what the OP was asking.

I have. I just tried to clarify this for the thread starter, but it was not necessary.
As someone mentioned somewhere else: your arrogance has no limit.

No, he means the 3000, a distance Keino has set a wr.
Are we overlooking the obvious... Robert Korzeniowski ?? WR 20k Walk,
3X Gold medalist 50k Walk.

Just adding extra detail. The point is he had the 1500m revord - an event you can win gold in. I find it interesting and quiet rare as the thread has revealed.

Fair enough. If we’re counting relays, add Butch Reynolds to the list: 400m WR and 4x400m OG.

Oh that Korzeniowski. How could we all forget a household name like him?

The last American to hold a WR over any distance longer than 400m (not counting event like the 500m, 600m) was Jim Ryun (mile, 1500) or Rick Wolhuter(880 yards, 1000m).
Incorrect, as Khalid Khannouchi broke his world record set while running for Morocoo while running as an American at the marathon, running 20538 at London 2002.
This is OP
I apologise for any confusion. I was texting and always take shortcuts when texting.
I meant
Winning Olympic Gold and never holding the WR in that event
AND
No Olympic Gold in an event where the athlete has /had the WR
--------------------------------------------------------
(of course it must be an olympic event where WR was held)
Seems not many. If I mentioned Ovett and not Coe in those Games, I thought it would have been clear.
So a pentathlete and the walker too! Can't believe I missed those ones. They are loving it over on Letswalk and Letsjump

She finished fourth in pentathlon at the 1974 European Championships. On 19 May 1976 she broke the world record in long jump with 6.99 metres in Dresden.[1] She only finished fourth in this event at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, but won the gold medal in pentathlon.

Actually Robert won Gold in both events and had the 50km record not the 20km
