Wang Yunxia was the opposite.

sorry meant that you couldn't set a record in the event you ever got the gold in.
Fine then El G had the WR in the 1500/mile and won gold in the 5000m in Athens. I don't think we specified that also winning gold in the event you have the WR in disqualifies you.
......Bolt....quite a few times...?

Lol there are like a dozen other examples.
No, the OP might have been a bit lazy in phrasing his question, but it seems obvious to me he meant an olympic gold medallist who set a WR in a different Olympic event (which he did ot win gold in) and not the event he won gold in. There are not a dozen examples of that.
I tend to agree.
In 78, with a 50.5 sec first 400m, I see Ovett capable of breaking the then WR of 1:43.44. Having said that, he may still not have won, depending on how doped Beyer was and possibly Coe being in the mix.
He should have been capable of the 1000m WR (Wohlhuter's 2:13.9), considering he had similar 1:43 low 800m ability as the diminutive American, and far better 1500m endurance.
The 1500, 1 mile and 2000m WR's are all a given.
Maybe Rono's 7:32.1 3000m, set in 78 itself, might have been a difficult one, but if Foster could run 7:35 and Moorcroft 7:32 high, then I see no reason that Ovett wouldn't at least have been very close.
I can also see Ovett running 13:08 in or around 78-80, had he a few serious efforts at the event, but probably not the same season as running an 800 WR.

Ovett record in mile 1500 2 mile. Gold in 800m.
Keino. Gold in 1500; wr 5k.
Plus gold in steeplechase in '72 and WR at 3000m. So, four different events with either a OG gold medal or a WR
The following dont qualify
Coe had a 1500 wr
Walker Ngeny Juantoreno. Didnt have wr in another Olympic event and the cuban had 800m gold and 800 wr
Lewis had WR in 100m
ElG had 1500m Wr
Keino. Good call. I was thinking of him. 3000 not an olympic event though.
Geb doesn't qualify as he had 10000 wr
Wang and fernanda good call

Yes, that's true. And perhaps Alberto too. I always thought he was in decline by 78, but looking at his results he ran 1:44 and a 44.27 400m and was unbeaten aside from an 800m at the end of the season where he finished 7th.
Shame he didn't race against Coe and Ovett in 78.
Anyone mention Zatopek? Gold in marathon, WR in 5k and 10k.

He also has set a 5000 wr
Do relays count? Allison Felix and Tianna Bartoletta were on the WR 4X100 relay team and have won Olympic gold in different events.
Thanks. I know. Poster was claiming keino did it twice
Perhaps too many working parts. But interesting to consider.
Kip Keino, WR in 3000 and gold in 1500m?
