Title says it all, what running workout do you do that hurts the most? I want my vision to get darker.
What workout when you want to hurt?

marathon time trial on a mountain trail.

Usually the shorter speedier stuff makes you puke. Try one of these;
“30/30s” 30 second 200m, 30 second rest, repeat- do til failure** or do as 400m or 800m reps with 400 jog rest
Also the “15x15” 100m reps in 15 seconds with 15 seconds rest. Repeat til failure**
3-4x400 @ 800m goal pace with 5 min rest
6-8x300m @ 1500 pace, 100m jog rest, start every 90 seconds
6-8 x400 @ 1500 pace with 60 second rest
**failure is when you can’t hit the time two times in a row. -
The fast long reps of 800-1mile with max rest are tough.

I agree with the above poster, if you want to hurt like that, speed stuff is the way to go. Longer stuff is mentally more difficult, but if you want to feel like you actually might die, speed workouts are the way to go. I'd add on; 300-200-300 off 1 minute rest, all out from the gun. Take 5 minutes rest and do it again. If you want more pain you can do a 3rd set but at that point you'll be crawling. Handily, you can pretty much divide your total time for 2 sets in half and get a good estimate of your 800m shape at the time.

For me, nothing hurts more than hard uphill running.
So if you want to hurt, I recommend the following treadmill workout:
1 mile warmup at 2% incline.
10 sets of :
60 seconds at 10% incline followed by 60 seconds at 2% incline
1 mile warmdown at 2% incline
The entire workout is done at the same speed. The only thing that varies is the incline.
After doing this workout a few times, I dramatically improved my time in a 4-mile uphill time trial. -

I watched a few high production value youtube "documentaries" about some ultras recently and was hoping I could get to the crying, blabbing like a baby, collapsing on the ground state in a little less time... Plus all the local trails are currently being used by xc skiers, but I'll give it a shot when it melts to mud.

I haven't raced anything shorter than a 15k in a few years, so these will kill me even after adjusting the times to my current abilities. Fingers crossed I'll puke, too, thanks!

What is max rest? HR < X? -
Seb Coe ladder, starting low ending high. If you don't know about the Seb Coe ladder, it was a ladder workout starting at 100m, working to 200m in increments of 10m at around 400 effort. The rest was to walk/jog to the start of the next rep. If you start low and end with 200 you'll be on the ground by the last rep unable to work for a solid 5 minutes. If you start with 200 I found it still hurts, but is much more manageable by the end.

THIS! Thank you, sir, sounds great!
my two pennies:

Putting this on my list, too.

I like this variation of a fartlek (brattlek? stigelek?), and treadmills do make me want to die, thanks! -

And there's the real coach.
I've been base building for a while and have had many slow miles to think and reflect on why I'm doing what I'm doing. I want to get stronger/faster, yes, but running is a thing I do to communicate with myself. I've learned a lot in the process, my body is stubborn, but always eventually responds to repeated inputs. If something isn't working, the culprit is usually my ego. I don't intend to run to compete with others, but sometimes in a race situation it happens. Win, loose, or draw, I always come out of those experiences having learned something more about communicating within myself. I miss that, and want to explore that realm further. -

solo time trials sound like the ticket to your destination. -
I think 600m reps are the worst but you have to really push them.

There was a classic lrc thread about running all out until...?
And that was the question. If you ran 100% all out what happens? A true 100% Does your body force you to stop at some point or do you just continually slow down until stopping. Or does some part of your body give out and you fall?
I really enjoyed that thread. Don't remember if anyone had the guts to do it. I imagine it would be very hard...
Please do it op and report back. -
When I tried that (for reasons unrelated to athletics) it was my breathing that actually gave out first.
