I should have just added a lap when I ran the 600 in college for a shot at 1:50.
What was your time in the 600?

Typical Northern VA puss.....
Can you do math? 1:22 would be the about the magic number for his statement.
Interesting opinion on situation, but we have to ask a professional runner to prove it. I found one of them with excellent resume, that he get from here . I can say that it is myperfectresume.
McGorty dropped out at 27:28 pace. The pace then picked up. So, it's not clear that he would have made the standard. I hope he gets that chance, though. It would take him not pacing to do it. He is not yet at the level that he can pace and run 27:20s. But he might be able to do it if he drafted the whole way.

Lol. Exactly the point of this thread. Some posters aren’t good with math or sports performance.
Follow up question
When Kipchoge set the wr in the marathon, why didn’t he continue to 50k to collect that record too?

don't forget Mo Ahmed paced that 5000m at Nike HQ to 4.6km
Maybe Jerry has plans he's not letting you in on......
That's exactly what I was thinking. People are assuming that McG couldn't have gone with the group for 10K, just because they had planned him to drop at 8.
That's a dumb assumption.
I don't think this is a huge deal. He's focusing on the 5k and was asked to pace through 8k. That's what Bowerman does. I agree he should have just gotten an all-time mark (helps marketing + contract negotiation) but he most definitely grabbed an 8k PR right? He got in a solid effort and the extra 2k might have hurt training & goals who knows. He's been a pro for 2.5 years. He's 25 and has plenty of time to step up in distance.
I imagine the plan was for him to go as long as he could as pace setter. That happened to be 8k. He had 5 laps left, it is more than likely he would have faded over 5 seconds slower per lap, possibly even worse. It's likely he would have finished 30 seconds back at 27:40. He also may be attempting a fast 5k sometime soon, and 8k was a great workout that won't destroy him from going to the well.
