1. The new Nike sprint spike may well have been shelved for IAAF rules, or the can of worms it might have opened (vague echos of Oscar Pistorius)
Now, we hear that it would diminish Usain Bolt's achievements. That is an excellent point.
2. Usain Bolt was one of the most public, highly paid athletes in the world through his career and not without good reason.
Bolt achieved among the highest profiles in all of sport. Unlike Jordan, however, any able-bodied person who chose, might have challenged Bolt, strapping on the available puma spikes, and laying down a 100m. time.
3. But training for the Marathon is another thing, let's not lie. There are no parties in clubs on the weekends for Eliud, Haile, and Kenenisa. Not a slight on Mr. Bolt, but athletes who did everything right deserve a special recognition, when some unknowns begin to run unthinkable times because of their shoes.
4. If the IAAF/Athletic-wear lobbies won't put an asterisk beside all super-shoe records, they should let Bolt fall by the wayside. We are already at the point of saying that the shoes of today could allow a mediocre athlete to beat the phenoms of yesterday.
