Couple thousand. Drop in the bucket for those guys
a friend i met at a camp went to NXN a couple years ago. Its a good amount of money. They literally pay for everything from flights, hotels, transportation, meals in addition to having the athletes on the Nike campus as well and making all the gear
I imagine it costs a tonne because of all of the things mentioned above X number of athletes, plus things like insurance and so on.
Compared to just straight up TV and digital/print advertising, it's actually inexpensive. It gives fairly broad reach into the entire high school xc and track world, as even the family and friends of average and poor teams are aware of and talk about the event. It also highly targets the best runners who may excel in college, and at some point become Nike athletes.
Even though shoe and gear sales come mostly from couch potatoes, it's important for Nike to build a lifelong relationship with real runners, as they often become advocates to the masses for Nike.
I would take a wild stab at $4 million for the whole shebang. Keep in mind the talent is free, the athletes are not paid to be in promo materials, or on the website. Also a typical 30 second Tv ad costs about $1.5 million just to produce, ie. before going out to buy airtime, so the $4million, while it sounds like a lot is the cost of let's say 3 ads for Jordan, or Tiger Woods brands.
Nope. Nike makes money on the events. NXR has tens of thousands of participants who average $25 per entry. Most attend an overpriced pasta dinner and spend $100 on clothing from China that costs Nike $5. So they make $300K on NXR and then turn around and spend $100K on NXN. Footlocker on the other hand, keep its costs low and the overall event costs them in the neighborhood of $100K.
They pay an absurd amount of money to resurface the golf course after the races tear it up
The answer is they do pay a lot of money out for all the things mentioned but they collect a lot in fees, and probably think they get enough value out of the "free" advertising, future sales, or whatever so they come out ahead.
To borrow from Breaking Bad. Nike is in the empire business. They spend play money on NXN
