While this looks bad on both sides —athletes not following rules, employees not handling their duties with competence — the real story is a major oversight by a corrupt athletic administration at a fledging university . Saginaw Valley State University has infamous for numerous NCAA Violations over the last couple of years, including: letting over 30 ineligible student athletes play (leading to NCAA barring certain sports from post season competition), a head coach having sexual relations with an athlete, numerous teams caught partying in spite of Covid Protocols (with lesser punishments than the one at hand), and others that are outside the scope of this topic.
Finally, this should concern all members of the running community. The athletes suspended for this had just come off of major record setting performances, including a top all time D2 5k, yet the athletic director seems to not even knows who they are — no warning, no meeting, not even an email. This is a school with a pristine 300m track and a general record of mediocre at best sports performance. The track team is one of the most successful programs on campus and these athletes are still subjected to this third-rate treatment. This should concern all of you. As runners, nobody outside of our insular community gives us the smallest modicum of respect. Situations like this should be brought to attention so that we can band together and have a fighting chance while they continue to cut Cross Country and Track programs to buy a new football water cooler.

Who is to say that they can not run outside? Why not just drive someplace and run outside off campus so no one would know?
Imposing rules that students can not run outside <0F is ridiculous. The administration who set this rule fails to realize that with proper attire the people can safely run outside in sub-zero temperatures. Call me crazy, but I would personally would much rather run outside in <0F than on the treadmill wearing a mask. I sweat so profusely that my mask would be absolutely drenched within a few minutes. Also I generate a ton of heat when I exercise, so bitter cold temperatures feel more comfortable to exercise in than the temperature in the gym.
In my experience XC skiiers tend to be a lot tougher when it comes to exercising outside in cold weather. I took a XC ski course in college and we skied in -20F windchill. None of us suffered from any ill effects. The administration also did not try to stop us.

False. I know my midwest P5 alma mater has a grand total of 0 treadmills dedicated for athletes. If you want to run on a treadmill you have to go to the regular student rec building.

Ok, so the athletes behavior concerning the few treadmills was not good. Yes, they shouldn't be abusing some fellow student doing their poorly paid student job. Yes, student rec center employee is kind of a douche but it is their job. The AD is over the top with their suspensions. I'm a little surprised that they would put a "no running" policy out there about running if it is less than 0. Does this rule apply to all students or just student athletes or just distance runners?
Perhaps some of the distance runners might consider transferring if they are not happy with the situation there.
Here it seems obvious that a prohibition on running outside when it's zero degrees out is absurd and ludicrous. We ran at -20 degrees outside in college in the winter and all we needed were the old fashioned heavy cotton sweats and a hat and gloves, and I recall overheating. They should not have violated the covid restrictions for TMills, though. They should just have signed up and done weights, ab work, or homework while waiting.
This post hit home for me as I have loose ties to the program, and I went through something similar in my collegiate running days. I have posted a reply thread to this, and I encourage all of you to take a look and help stand up for these athletes:

The School has handled athletics with respect to Covid like a joke, at least from what I’ve heard and seen, especially in relation to track. Like mentioned before in one or two of the posts, the school has been aware/shut down multiple parties and large gatherings without significant punishments levied to any other team. The school has never had an issue with the team practicing outside in years prior. One could potentially think that past years, the school turned a blind eye to athletes running in unsafe conditions due to not wanting to disrupt team success, but that gets thrown out the window when two of the athletes suspended just broke a school record and put up all time great D2 performances. The school has only been called off 1 time this school year, and that was due to snow, not the cold. If SVSU’s president is willing to let people walk the half mile from the University Village to Gilbertson Hall or Science East on any day, he should be willing to let his athletes train in the same weather. Or maybe the SV President doesn’t care what happens to his non athletes as they brace the cold for class.
Honestly I think they should just punish Wesley. He's pretty gross and he would make a good scapegoat.
Love when stuff like this blows up, EXPOSING the massive overreach by admin these days. While they continue to sweep under the rug actual NCAA violations, sexual misconduct, etc. GET IT TOGETHER!!
There's a very simple solution to avoid all of this.. There's another D2 team bout 2.5 hours west of here that treats their distance program with the respect they deserve. If you're a top tier MI HS runner looking at D2, go to GV and avoid this BS
If you are a top tier runner looking for D2- that also wants to be injured, get run into the ground, overlooked, and unless you are top tier of that top tier hardly run in a jersey, then GV is your spot. There isn't a program in the state that people aren't going to complain about, from Michigan/MSU to Oakland/CMU to GV/SV to Ferris/Northwood. All of these places are going to have their problems, none better than the other because of it.
College athletics isn't the end of the world. Everyone should quit whining and just enjoy your time there. Lighten up.
