havent seen any pros wear the alphaflys since the olympic trials. Pretty sure jacob kiplimo raced in next% for his 57:30 half. Next% are lighter and less clunky so id go with them.
Definitely Nexts

So the Alphafly 's are a failure?
Yep, except for road marathons.
I personally think alphaflys are too heavy to run 5k/10k in, but they are more cushioned. Probably slower than next% for everything under the marathon.
Just wait a little bit more for the forthcoming 2%, which is an even lighter Next% designed for 5k and 10k.

So, you mean the Streaks?
no i dont think they have a name yet but a handful of athletes have been wearing them (centro, jager, mead)
My 5k PB is in Alphaflys. Haven't tried to PB since in Vaporflys so maybe VFs are better, but it was a time that was beyond my ability at the time, so they're definitely still very, very capable at shorter distances.
There is a significant flaw in the logic people use to choose VFs instead though. You need more cushion at longer distances... yeah sure. But people say Alphas are too heavy for 5k? But not for marathon? You're literally carrying that extra weight over 8 times as far. I don't think the choice is as clear cut for 5k/10k as people think. I'm not sure any of these people have tried running fast over shorter distance in Alphaflys.
OK, so I have a good answer for you. Wear one on one foot and one on the other. Compare and contrast. If the left half of your body is 4% faster than the right, you have your answer.
Almost every elite runs half and under with the Vaporfly. The only one I remember running a 5/10k with the Alphafly is Morhad Amdouni on two occasions (elites only 10k races in Albi, France and Barcelona, Spain last month, in 27/28)
4% FN are good for hammering a 5k.
Errrrr 4% FK.

Weight on the foot matters more when you're running a faster pace.
i train in both. and all i ever heard was how heavy the alphaflys are and how high they are and slow for 5k/10k.
the AF is an exceptional shoe and you can easily use it for 5k races. its fast.
but it comes down to personal choice...to many the AF dont "feel" like a 5k shoe. the drop and height of the AF feels different to the next%. The weight is negligible to be honest when on the feet. The AF also lasts longer as the next% can wear down quicker.
The next% "feel" more like a 5k shoe compared to the AF. and that is down to the drop and foot position.
Im in my late 40s and ran a 15.30 5k in AF the other week. and am currently training towards a sub 15.
Basically both are excellent shoes but it comes down to personal choice which you prefer. you wont make a bad decision. i love the AF and they can easily do the job well... but would still wear the next% in a 5k/10k race. But if you are not sure , go for the next%.
