I can't believe such drivel can actually pass for journalism these days - I guess that speaks to how idiotic our society is that this crap actually sells. There is no "model minority myth," nobody believes that Asians are "inherently successful or problem-free." Asians, on average, do better in academics and make more money but nobody believes it's because they are "inherently successful" it 100% has to do with culture and genetics (nature and nurtue, just like everything else) and I don't think academically-focused Asians are going to disagree with that. Whoever authored this is detached from reality.
Finally, Tammy Duckworth calls out all this inclusion talk nonsense that has completely ignored Asian Americans. How can you pretend you are for inclusion when you leave out Asian Americans? We always sit back quietly with the culture of not complaining and then we get excluded or even at times abused. Racism is not just about black people. We always get stereotyped as the nerdy passive math geek. The media never casts us as the cool leader. (The Bruce Lee exception from years ago and even that was based on a stereotype)
Asian Americans need to learn from blacks and Native Americans how to capture the media's attention. America has become aware of their needs. We are closer now but it took how many attacks on elderly Asian Americans to get noticed.
Asians are far and away the top performing students in America.
Yet they are discriminated against when it comes to getting into the Ivies and other prestigious schools.
And, in the case if Harvard, a Judge agreed that Harvard was doing this, but that its okay!
Unfortunately, this kind of ignorance is still widespread. That's why it has to be confronted at every opportunity.

I agree w your sentiment, but Native Americans have hardly captured the media’s attention - they’re dying on reservations and no one is aware or seems to care.
Asians need to fight back against affirmative action policies that specifically discriminate against them.

I don't want to make this out to be one minority against another and the picture you present is likely true in some places but in upstate New York members of the Oneida Nation are the wealthiest residents in the area. They operate a plethora of tax free businesses, a billion dollar casino and resort center with limited payout to government and they pay no property or school taxes. All the members of the Oneida Nation get free medical and free tuition to any school they choose. The Oneida nation will pay for tutoring, private schools and gives each member a healthy stipend.
The fact that you think all native Americans live in poverty just shows how effective their lobbying as been compared to Asians. (Google the Oneida Nation if you don't believe me)
Asians should be screaming from the rooftops about being denied college entrance because of fear of having too many Asians.

Thanks, I appreciate the post.
All natives do not live in poverty, all blacks don't live in poverty, all whites are not privileged etc..etc...I don't think it's the lobby but rather ignorance or perhaps prejudice (but not in this case)that compels people to lump native Amerucans or Asians as all the same.
Yes, Asians should be protesting these quotas.
Yes I agree mostly with what you say. There are rich and poor in all segments and people shouldn't be lumped together. Maybe lobbying was not the correct term I used, but other minorities have gotten media awareness and sensitivity to their difficulties. They effectively communicated their plight and got their message across to many. Up until this recent onslaught of attacks on Asian Americans, few really considered the Asian American as having to deal with racism and exclusion. Its just not in the Asian culture to complain or lobby for their own needs.
Somehow racist attitudes toward Asian Americans seem more acceptable to some. The college entrant prejudice is a great example. I had a nephew tell me he didn't want to admit he has an Asian background on his college application. How sad is that.
I was happy to see Duckworth call out this push for diversity as not being diverse because Asian Americans were not included. Finally we are speaking out.
Oneida nation is a tiny slice of Natives.
Most natives in reservations live in abject poverty - this is well established.
I lived and worked on the Largest reservation in the US, Navajo Nation, for several years as a doctor (along w several other Asian and Indian doctors). About 30% there lack electricity and another 30-40% lack running water. Life expectancy is lower than for any other group in the US.
Again not trying to belittle your real point, but Natives also have a highly ineffective lobby.
As far as the college thing, I agree that Asians (all of them including Indians) should be up in arms over college admission double standards. The same applies to grad schools, leadership positions etc

Yes that is a very sad situation for them. In New York state and most particularly upstate, it is quite different. In New York state the Oneida nation is quite a well funded political force with strong influence all the way into state politics. This is the group that got Washington football to change its name. Its not isolated nor insignificant small potatoes. Obviously that's not true in other parts of the country and your point there is correct.
But my point was that the Asian Americans really don't have as effective organizations communicating their needs to the general population or politicians. That's why Duckworth's stand was so refreshing to hear.
Admittedly I've become more reactive (and angered) by the Asian American situation since the onslaught of attacks on our elderly.
I agree with the general sentiment of the thread. For a long time there has been resentment toward Asians for their success (as a whole), and that’s led to a lot of glossing over the historic racism.
But to be fair, I think you’re putting too much emphasis on the Oneida Nation and similar groups that aren’t representative of most natives. It’s like saying blacks are powerful and rich because they male up the NBA and many other industries of sports and entertainment. Just because Lebron’s kids have every opportunity imagineable doesn’t really speak to most people’s experience as black.
For every nation that has a wealthy casino, there are probably ten that live in the conditions the doctor guy described. Living on most reservations is awful because while free from the US, you also don’t have any of the fallbacks that low income people have.
Real question is, if you hypothetically had a chance to become a native somewhere in the US, but it’s totally random who you wind up as, do you take that offer?
