Awesome! I broke 4 a few times, pretty hard to do. Not in high school tho, probably could of.
What are the chances he breaks Webb’s 3:53 this spring???
Good luck, Kid!

One of the fascinating things from his 4:13 time trial 6 months ago is how much better his form has improved. He looked very controlled and relaxed tonight almost Willis-like.
No way this kid runs only 30 miles a week from his coach
Good run! With optimal CV training in my system Hobbs could be running 3:45-47 very soon.
He’s got a Strava for those curious of his training.

I can't believe you posted this. Sour grapes cause he broke your runner's record!
PS- Kessler was also Kramer’s original name on Seinfeld.
Two of the best running trails near Fayetteville are Hobbs State Park and Kessler Mountain. I really want there to be a connection here.
His Strava shows he hit 50 miles a couple times but it's really inconsistent so I doubt he records everything

I’m pretty sure that’s satire.

Lol.
The goober narrating the video called him Kessler Hobbs like 8 times.
People in the Michigan are not shocked about this.
Also seems like anyone shocked about this also doesn't realize we are going to have some Seniors(or really kids from any grade) all of a sudden be top notch when they weren't that level the last time they did Track in 2019. Not everyone chases races all across the country all of the time.
Kid has a very efficient running motion he has a bright future.
This isn't a surprise, it is the fastest time in indoor history. He is ahead of Ryun and Webb and Fisher and Hunter and Pre and Rupp and Ches and Liquori and everyone else. You are not realizing that this wasn't a 4:05.
What shoes was he wearing? Next age Nike spikes? I still have a hard time believing that the high school record was broken by no-namer in his first professional invite. It ain't supposed to be that easy. His progression isn't indicative of a sub-4 miler at all. California has a dozen or so HS boys who go under 4:05/ 8:50/ 14:XX, and you never hear of them breaking 4 in the spring as Seniors. I have to give credit to where it's due though, this kid is a massive talent and we'll be hearing more from him in the future. But I still believe that the coaching was the X-factor- you'd have to think that the coach of Nick Willis, who himself has broke 4 for 15 consecutive years, would be able to guide Hobbs to a sub-4.

insanely smooth
Of course coaching is always a major part..plus the fact he gets to train with a world class miler.
Yes. I understand that he missed much of junior year but did run some indoor. With all of the downplaying of Clayton Murphy or Karissa Schweizer or others early in the season, shouldn't we expect 3:50 by July? It sounds insane but this kid had never been in a race like this before. Can he make the trials in the 1500?

Yeah, I think it has to be coaching more than the spikes (if he was wearing next age Nike spikes). I figure really good spikes may let you cut .5-1 second max off of your time compared to spikes that came out a couple years ago. They may bring a 4:00.2 miler down to 3:59.9 but I don't think they'd bring a 4:02-05 miler down to a 3:57. I think it's much more likely that this is a kid who had a ton of time on his hands, fewer distractions, more time to train, and the coach of Nick freaking Willis to help him.
Looking back, several of the great HS runners ended up having a pro coach in HS which undoubtedly helped them. Rupp and Salazar, Webb and Raczko, Hunter and Schwartz, and probably others I just can't remember. I'd bet that having a coach that really knows what he's doing and not having to be in school 8 hours a day really, nor having as many social opportunities has helped more than anything else.
Super excited to see what this kid can do in outdoor track. I know there were people who thought Drew Hunter could break Webb's outdoor record if he hadn't gotten sick, and the conditions are probably as favorable as they're ever gonna be for this kid to have a shot at it. Still, there's a huge difference between 3:57 and 3:53, so it's really too early to make any strong statements.
Hobbs seems like a fast twitch monster to me. According to Strava, he averages around 40 mpw, which consists of 5 mile easy runs at 7 min/mi pace, and a long run at 6 min/mi pace. These easy pace are very easy for a sub-4 runner, and doesn't seem to provide the training stimulus to run sub 4. However, as another poster suggested, he doesn't log workouts, which I would assume to be secret due to the fact that it's used by Nick Willis. Would be guessing that they're heavily anaerobic in nature and more along the lines of 800m training. Something like 4x400?
