That's too bad. Traveling is actually quite cheap. You just need enough time.
In 87 I was living in LA with a family for 3 month. I got a bit bored bought a Lets Go guidebook, got some vaccinations and took a Greyhound to the Mexican boarder. My host thought I was crazy. I had a great month traveling by bus all the way to Guatemala and back.
