Maybe there was a thread already...
if a current sub 2:08 marathon guy trains for an ultra (100K world record, 100mile world record, etc...) do you think they could break it? If so, who?
I believe Kigchoge could bust out 5:30s for 60+miles pretty easy. Same with Rupp. Thoughts?
I think that is the prevailing thought...but until one of them tries it, there is no point in arguing about it.
Very few sub 2:08 people are going to try for this because, as of right now, there is ZERO money in it. Now maybe if Nike or Hoka or someone put up a huge check (like I'm thinking probably $500,000 and above) to the winner, one of these guys might make a go at it.
As far as what Jim Walmsley said, I'd bet that if you took one of those sub 2:08 guys, put them in the Grand Canyon on a R2R2R and had Jim race them, Walmsley would destroy them. I'd even garner to say that Walmsley would win if you gave that same sub 2:08 runner 6 months to train for it.
