Judging by the fact that UML had many runners doubling and running off events, I would guess they were going for a team title which didn't work. It appears Stoney Brooke was focused on getting as many athletes titles as possible spreading them out among many events and only running 1 event each. This strategy worked. The team scores reflect that. I believe Paul Hogan is with the BAA now. Didn't the UML national qualifier beat the SBU runners at your conference meet and regional meet? I think his performance at the nationals would show that it was not the shoes.
Your last statement Nick, appears to adhear to the take that SBU is a team of the past. Not saying UML is. BC certainty is not either. Watch out for Tufts.
This is false. Coulter of SBU won the 1k and ran on the winning 4x8 and DMR.
Avery of SBU won the 5k and only got 12th in the 3k. He beat the UML national qualifier (Alfond) by 9 seconds in the 5k.
Becker of SBU got 2nd in the mile and was on the winning 4x8.
Moffett of SBU won the 3k and was on the winning DMR. Alfond of UML was 3rd in the 3k.
Biondi of SBU was 2nd in the 3k and was on the winning DMR. Alfond of UML was 3rd in the 3k.
Alfond had a good day at nationals but was only 69th. UMBC had an athlete place 27th a few years ago so it's not like Alfond did better than America East runners of the past, either. 29:00 at regionals to 31:39 at nationals, I think the shoes had a lot to do with it.
