Was fairly fit but a bad runner when young because of asthma, best in HS was 6’05 mile. Picked up running 3 years ago and ran a 6’15; 5’59 and 5’49 in the past 3 years (asthma inhalers work well for me). Checked the marathon off my list last year (3’50”) and now want to train for a sub 5 mile. I can only maintain the needed pace for 200 meters or so. For speed interval workouts, should I keep running at that speed, rest longer and repeat OR run at a speed that I can last longer (closer to my current mile pace), rest less and run longer (like 400m).
I can only afford to do one speed session per week as it really does take me that long to fully recover. I jog at snail pace on other days (9-10 min mile for 3-6 miles and a 8 mile long jog once a week with one day full rest).
