I know this thread may seem repetitive and cliché, but I have heard that another thread said that running a 20 minute 5K off of 40 MPW is average talent.
I have ran a 23:30 5K off of very little training, only a couple of runs, 8 mpw. Does this mean anything? I know I have a long way to go, but I'm wondering.

We call this type of thread a "david45."
To humor you, a 20:00 5k after running 40 mpw is not good. It's probably actually bad.
A 23:30 after 8 mpw sounds completely normal. You are what is called "untrained."
You will observe a big improvement from 23:30 if you continue to run anymore. That is completely expected. How much you improve could possibly be telling. The more you improve, and the rate at which you improve could indicate your potential. You are far from needing to worry about that.

So you're telling me that 8 mpw is the equivalent to being untrained?
If that is true, I would say that is at least a good sign.
It means nothing. You didn't tell us if you are 10 pounds overweight or 50 pounds overweight. What is your height and weight and age?
Don’t get too excited about getting fast quick. Run your easy miles very slow - 10-9 min pace - no faster. You can jump up to 20 fairly quick, but after that I’d say you should add no more than a few miles a week. After a month or so of this, do a tempo run and some strides every week. Don’t get injured, do this for a few months, and who knows, you might just get faster.
I am 5'11", and 135 pounds. I'm 22.
Just for curiosity's sake....what would happen if a novice runner who is a 7:30 miler for example ran their runs at 9 or 10 mph? Would that screw up their progress? I had a friend once who did that, and I'm pretty sure he was doing it very wrong.

You simply won't be able to do that for all of your runs. Do that twice a week for 3-6 miles at a time.
Also, look up some real training plans.
I ran 17:40 in my 5k.
Didn’t consider myself a talented distance runner.
You are at ideal weight and age so your upside is pretty limited if you are only running that fast. I predict a lifetime PR of 20:30.

He's asking whether it makes sense for a 7:30 miler to run 6:00 pace in his training runs. I was a 4:30 miler in HS and l liked to run 4:00 pace on my over distance runs.
Well, I have only been doing 8 mpw.
My 23:30 5K took about 3 months.
I wouldn't listen to the guy telling you to run slow miles. If I were you I would do 20-30 miles per week fast everyday until you get in the 18 minute range. And then you can start worrying about workouts and stuff.
3 months? Then I predict 21 minutes. I though you had just begun.

Wouldn't it be bad, though, for a 7:00-7:30 miler to do their runs at a 6:00 pace?
Isn't it true that running slower builds endurance?
I have done runs on a number of occasions which I've heard as being categorized as "way too fast".
I think that if I would have slowed down, I may have had better improvement. I don't think my progression is awful, though.
Is is some David45 bull. No one on this website is gonna be able to tell u what u can run. Look up a training plan online or just run more and maybe a little faster for a couple of those miles and you should see some improvement. At your level just worry about getting more fit. 8mpw is nothing. Come back when ur at LEAST hitting 25-30 and maybe youll see more progress
