Boris had a press conference today.
Said new strain might be 30% more deadly.

Enough of that fear mongering!
Just stop it!
May be. OK. If it is proven that it is, sure, post about it.
Stop the fear mongering! It has already caused enough suffering and death and there is no vaccine for it!
I agree covid-19 is a hype.
I see no reason why new information should be surpressed.
This isn't Boris coming up with the numbers himself.
From article:
"Four teams of researchers at Imperial, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Public Health England and Exeter University assessed the variant’s lethality by comparing death rates among those who tested positive for the new variant with those who were infected with older variants."
It isn't more deadly. It just spreads more easily, so there is a greater likelihood of more ilnesses and deaths.

What you said is what was initially reported.
What I wrote was what Boris Johnson said in his press conference today..

Not according to the article
Give evidence to show that "fear mongering" caused any deaths due to COVID.
Does this mean I now have a 0.0089% chance of dying? Now approaching the danger level of strep throat?

Oh you need evidence? You don't believe the reports, stories, articles, testimonies, of increased number of suicides, substance abuse/relapse, oncological patients not getting treatment, and so many not even getting diagnosed, people who refused to go to hospital for treatment, out of fear, and died at home from countless conditions?
But you believe the rest. Whatever incites fear you believe.
I am not going to do your work for you.
Your post shows that you wouldn't admit that covid-related fear mongering has caused deaths so I have just wasted my time.
What cannot be discounted is that transmission likely increased dramatically when temperatures dropped and people gathered for the holidays, so comparing R values between different strains may not be exact unless they are comparing transmission rates over the same period of time in similar locales. The new variant showed up in the testing at about the same time as the other two items occurred, which may be why the variant is made out to be more transmissable / lethal. Time will tell as the vaccines continue to be deployed and a couple regions are close to reaching herd immunity (the north west UK mortality rate is at 0.1935%). The death rate in the UK has been about 75% higher than the US over the past week (the UK had 6,586 new deaths over the past 7 days, which would be equivalent to about 32,000 in the US, when adjusted for population where we had 18,400 over the same period).

You don't think scaring people away from getting needed medical treatment killed anyone this year? That is won't kill people down the road either? Why do we even have hospitals then; just to treat covid patients and nobody else?

I dont know people that are scared easily from Covid might be the type who think every bump, cough, burp and fart is cancer and might go to the Dr for everything

Do you think avoidance of care saves lives? Stop the fear, it is killing people. We can address the pandemic better without the irresponsible, harmful, stressful and deadly fear mongering.

It was in the news today, where my parents live (not the US). A doctor, invited to a program on TV, telling about patients with heart problems who, because of fear of catching covid in the hospitals, have died at home or who sought help too late and ended up dying in hospital when the condition could have been treated earlier.
He said he personally knew a handful of people who died in such circumstances.
This is no conspiracy theory. This is not saying covid doesn't exist. This is reality whether you believe it or not.

thank you
Don't know where you are getting your data.
Current covid deaths in UK are even higher than what you said compared to the US.
8565 in UK last week.
Similar death rate for US would be about 40k a week.

I totally agree with all of this.
Can't see that supressing new data is a solution however.
For instance: In London, 55% of all hospital beds are currently occupied by covid 19 patients.
The combination of more transmissable virus and more serious outcomes when infected leading to pressure on health services can't be silenced away either.
More deadly AND the various vaccines are ineffective on it.
My bad. I must have transposed numbers when I was writing it down. I just went back on the UK site:
https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/
And it is at 8,686, which would equate to roughly 42,000 deaths in the US, which is about 130% higher. On the bright side, their 7 day case numbers are down 25%, which would indicate a decreasing R value and hopefully a trend toward herd immunity between the wild virus and the vaccines.
