Yea - OP clearly doesn't understand that you need to train hard to run fast ... I'm slower than the friend in question, but as a college freshman but I run 6k tempos at that pace too... and I have teammates of the same age who run just as fast or faster.
If you look at any pace charts and their track prs, the training lines up.
And you need to realize that a flat, hard dirt+asphalt road is much faster than an XC course.
