Running USA does stats on running trends every year. Women's depth has dominated for several years now- 61% of road racers are women. "Competitive depth"... Just look at the Olympic Marathon Trials. No, there aren't just more women cause of "slower standards". There's simply more women in the open age group running marathons = more competitive depth too.

Putting quotes around something doesn’t make it untrue. There are more women at the trials because the standard is softer. It’s been discussed and demonstrated ad nauseum on this message board. Virtually no disputes that, except apparently you.

Statement A does not imply statement B. A marathon field is like 5% serious athletes and 95% scrubs. Men outnumber women in the 5%. Women outnumber men significantly in the 95%, hence the participation gap.
