I'd say my best and worst were both Fords.
Worst - 1997 Taurus. Transmission issues just before 36k, supposedly minor issue fixed under 3/36 warranty. Same issue cropped up again at around 39k (no longer under warranty) and dealer claimed needed new $2k tranny. Learned to start off slowly from a stop instead. Then oil pump failed at less than 50k and blew engine. Fought with Ford for a couple months until they "let" me purchase an extended warranty that they then backdated. We ended up giving that car to my mother-in-law and it never had any more problems until she could no longer drive.
Best - 2001 Ford Explorer SportTrac. Had it for 18 years and 240k miles with zero drive train issues. Sold it to my neighbor's ex-boyfriend a year ago and still see him driving it around. Must be around 250k now.
My Japanese brand cars haven't been bulletproof, though. Had an '87 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II where an apex seal chipped, broke another apex seal and scored the rotor housing before exiting through the exhaust port. That was something like $3k to rebuild. Had a 2007 Toyota Sienna minivan where the power sliding door cable broke way too early in its life and required a whole new motor assembly. Toyota wanted $2k for that. Also, factory installed, roof mounted dvd player was nothing but trouble. When we traded it in, it was facing another $1k plus repair that I no longer remember.
