I am a 24 year old male, and have lived in the DC area for my entire life. I grew up in the close suburbs, went to GW, and have lived and worked in/around DC for the couple years since graduating. The reasons I am thinking of moving to Denver are:
- DC feels too comfortable and I think a change of scenery would be good for me. I think getting out of my comfort zone would push me to develop new hobbies and make new friends.
- I love the outdoors, especially in no particular order: running, skiing, backpacking, motorcycling, open water swimming e.t.c.
- A couple of my male friends are moving there as well, and I have a couple more friends who currently live there.
The reasons I am worried about moving to Denver are:
- Right now I am single, and empirically I have noticed I am a lot happier when there is a woman in my life, and I am worried by what I have heard about the dating scene for men in their 20's. Supposedly the city as a whole has more young men than young women (google Menver), so just purely probabilistically speaking my chances of finding a nice attractive girl might be lower. I know that this should not be a guiding factor for life choices but still, it is something I worry about
- I love DC and I know that Denver will be a downgrade in some respects. DC is an incredibly diverse, vibrant city, full of fascinating people and culture, and Denver seems a little bit more bland. From what I have heard, most of the young people in Denver are relatively privileged white people who moved out there because they want to ski more and take a mini vacation from life (and admittedly I will most certainly contribute to this demographic).
I would be really appreciative of any thoughts from people who know about Denver. I should also add that I am not making this move for professional reasons, I work in tech and am pretty confident I will be able to find a decent job there.
