I saw the 72 Olympics live from the stands at the 1500 start about 4 rows from the rail. and he was handled comfortably by the guys who won. Ran a silly race and lost 3rd.
Perhaps if he'd had time to mature and grow he'd have been a super star. But he didn't.
But that was just about the stupidest tactic in a race I can imagine. I can understand the leading, but they roll by him at 800 to go, and instead of settling he goes back to the front.
More balls than brains. But tactically inept against the real elite.
A lot of athletes got left on the cutting room floor due to injury or timing. In his case it was self inflicted.
