HHW: Interesting to see that you decided to get a coach. My overall impression is that you’ve been very smart about your training, but there can certainly be a benefit to getting someone else’s perspective.
RRR: Nice solid week. Like putting money in the bank.
Victor: JRB.
Stone: Solid recovery week for Mrs. Stone.
fatsos: Nice work in that half TT. Takes some mental fortitude to put in that kind of long effort on your own.
Mike: Nice solid week, good mix of low-key stuff (and I like the no-watch easy runs). Hope the move goes smoothly.
GNR: Solid week, steady efforts and progressions seem like a good idea this time of year. How much of the 50k do you expect to be pacing?
jmar: Good work pushing through the dark, cold, and rainy.
Seppo: Going to be rocking for that half. Is the race itself at altitude or back down?
OR: Good to hear the back eased up on you. Not sure what the conditions are like where you are, but my experience is that cold temps and/or poor winter footing can lead to tight hamstrings and hips, which can contribute to back issues. Just a thought.
Lanc: C is for cookie and that’s good enough for me. Hope the knee has stayed settled down.
darkwave: Impressive long run workout. Stay safe with the craziness.
Sub 6: Hope you’ve been able to find a Goldilocks pace where the left calf and right hip are both ok. Likewise, stay safe with the craziness.
lurker: Good to see you getting in a little cross-country – nice progress from this time last year! We seem to be in a similar place right now, though I think you’re just a bit fitter than I am, and you definitely have better speed. Look forward to following your training – I suspect we’ll continue to see the times drop significantly!
runnerchef: Congrats on getting the renovation done.
rucker: Nice mix of work in a busy week. Gotta just roll with things sometimes.
Tyler: Strong week. Fairly aggressive considering the race last week, but sounds like you came through it well. A more structured approach to strength training sounds like a good idea. (Not that I would have any idea about that…)
ZM: Impressed by the discipline both in terms of keeping on through the snow and ice (ice is the worst) and by not going out for that last tenth of a mile.
Viking: Hope that you’re able to manage the glute glitch successfully. With the progression you’re looking at, is the goal just to maximize the volume of training at that steady state effort?
Allen: Looking at that schedule you laid out – that’s a lot of quality work. You’re a beast, man.
Sam: Hope the foot eases off on you.
stat: Appreciate your insight into that style of workout and mile training in general. Kind of a funny story: one of the biggest progressions I ever made in the mile came off running only 400m repeats at right around mile pace. This was in the spring of my sophomore year in high school. Pretty much every weekday, I would walk to a track after school and do a couple of laps of warmup followed by six to eight 400s with a lap jog in between. Ended up dropping my mile time from something like 5:45 indoor that winter to 5:16 in a just-about-solo time trial. Not sure whether this reflects more poorly on my lack of ability or my lack of training knowledge at the time, but it was actually pretty fun.
