Had a stress reaction a little while back. I listened to doctors and assume you are doing the same. Took a ton of time off, probably too much time to be safe. Did a walk/run plan that drove me mad but it built me up to continuous running over several weeks, with off days built in. I haven't looked back. This was 2 years ago. I'm hitting good mileage these days & grabbing PBs at the shorter stuff.
Be very cautious on the way back from injury. Don't ever run if you feel the slightest in the injured area. Even when you think you are back, expect that every other run will be like "oh yes I'm back" and then you must resign the next run.
When back in almost full training, start a specific exercise routine for your injured area. What exercise to do? Try different exercises until you hit 2-3-4 exercises that stresses the specific area. Those that feel right for your injury are probably the correct ones and will help. Do them frequently. It doesn't need to be either hard or long. What matters is that you are doing them regularly.
