Watching tonight's game where the Clemson defense gave up a TD on 6 out of 7 drivefs, I'm reminded of a thought I've been having the last 10 years.
When I see college football scores repeatedly of like 60 to 50, I just don't get it. How in the world arethe defenses so bad?
It reminds me of a story my dad told me about my age 7 soccer team. My dad was the coach and didn't know much about soccer. He offered to take his English co-worker out to lunch to get some tips. The guy said to my dad, "I don' t need to go out to lunch to help you. I can help you right here, right now." My dad said, "But I haven't even told you about the team."
The guys replied. "That's true. I don't need to know about the details of the team. Each Monday I've asked you about that's wekeend game and you've gold me was it 6 to 4, 5 to 3, etc That's not what a soccer score should be."
Then the guy told my dad some simple advice something along the lines of. "Figure out who your best players are and put at least half of them on defense."
For 10 years, I keep thinking to myself, "Are these multimillion dollar coaches missing something so basic like my dad?"
Yes, I know the clock stops more often in college football. Yes, I know the rules favor the offense but still - these teams shouldn't be coughing up 50+ points every other week. If i was a college AD, I'd tell my coach, "Put at least half your best players on defense."
It just seems to me the guys on defense aren't nearly the same athletes as offense. Yes. I know maybe the parents are afraid to put their kids on defense out of a fear of concussions but it seems to me just putting some stars on defense would be a huge help.
Anyone with actual football expereince agree with me?
