We are ultrarunners, we are already friends :-)
Is it possible to just use your favorite trail shoe? Plenty of people run on the road with "trail" shoes (especially if they don't have a crazy aggressive tread), and vice versa.

John was very vocal about Leadville 100 and the Ouray 100.
How I understood the issues at the time he was right on both counts.
Leadville has a weird selection policy ( they didn't even let Jim Walmsley in) and Ouray 100 was a mess of a race a couple years back. That might have changed. I don't know.
If I don't mix that up, I remember there was a "crazy lady" involved in that Ouray race.
That might explain the other accusations.
As always, if you don't like a race director or what he/she does, just run somewhere else.
I have done that plenty of times.

I'm not one to defend those races, but John has harassed in DM-s somebody who I know well personally, and multiple people who I ran races with. He is simultaneously a great guy but sometimes unstable, so different people will see different things in him.
Good luck on your project!
Wondering why Endorphin Speed is being recommended over the Endorphin Pro for longer distances?
Random ultra question: Provided it's on the road (w/ no climbing or difficult terrain), is covering 5 miles per hour an aggressive or moderate pace?

Wow that’s fast; you’re good...when I answered the question I didn’t realize this was a duck measuring contest; hopefully one day I can be as good as you .
Why are you doing this then? Why are you calling it FKT? You do know that the “F” in FKT stands for “fastest,” right? It is, by definition, a contest.
Good luck with your duck, your dink, and your on-foot road trip.

5 miles is a moderate pace.
But you have to understand that one day 2 or 3 in a multiday effort you have no choice in paces anymore you run what you can and that is a lot slower than you think.
Also short breaks ad up and add to the slowness.
So you might run a 6 mph pace but at the end of the day it's more of a 5.5 or 5 mph over the whole effort.
