This⬆... It is a good time, unless you've been doing 50-60 miles per week with track intervals for the previous 44 months. Then it's a decent time.

My mistake. Of course you're right. A 51 yr old breaking 5 minutes in the mile is high "National Class" (87% Age Performance).

No, it is what it is. It's high "Regional Class" (77% Age Performance), nothing more, nothing less, and whatever workouts did, or did not go into getting there are irrelevant to what the Age Performance is. (Besides, 'workouts' can result in injuries.)
it's all about the AGE GRADE wrote:

Um, well, no. His future potential depends a lot on how much training he's recently done. It's the same reason some college coaches are more likely to recruit a kid who ran 9:20 off of 35 miles per week than a kid who ran 9:10 off of 85 miles per week.

Random replies:
- Look at a bell curve it. It describes a heck of a lot of stuff that humans wonder about.
- The word "relative."
- Personal interests/desires.
- Given above, your question is somewhere between difficult and impossible to answer. Of course, as mentioned, looking at performance tables (more specific bell curves) gives some indication.
- If you're asking this question, you almost certainly don't know enough about running performance to state your second sentence. If a fellow 37-year old who ran, say, 4:15 in high school was running 20 quality miles a week, he'd likely beat you by tens of seconds. Are there are lot of people like that out there? No. But when you show up at a race, they'll be there.
no
Your performance is not as good as you think. You are doing enough mileage to get you to a time near your max performance level. Yes, you could bump your mileage to 50 but you won't see nearly as much improvement as you think in the mile. If you are running 1/2 marathons on 20 MPW vs. 50 MPW, yes.

It’s very good for the level of training
Bekele is slightly older then the OP and is the world's greatest thonner and should get the WR and Olympic gold next year. So you can still run well. Bekele ran 2:01:41 at 37

21 meters per week isn’t much.
DING DONG! It was 21 minutes a week, which is more awesome than 21 meters per week.
When I was in high school, I considered sub-6 for girls and sub-5 for boys "good." If you were close, then you were on your way. We ran 20 to 25 miles per week and were not competitive at the state level.
So I think it means you have talent - not Olympic Trials qualifier talent, but the equivalent of Boston qualifier talent at the mile. And also if you run more, you'll get faster. Break 5! it'll make you feel good.
The other thing is that you say "time trial." I personally can run a hell of a lot faster in a race than a time trial. So it's hard to say how good you really are unless we know how much faster you could run in race conditions.

What's your mile PB?
If you could run under 4:45 I would be more impressed. I ran 4:22 in high school averaging 20 miles a week. All miles on the track.
i'm 38 and have averaged about 12-14 mpw this year. Just ran 16:52 and ran the last 2 miles of a run in 10:33.
I ran 4:06 mile and 48.6 400m split in college, so I guarantee you I can run under 5:00 minutes right now based on thoe other little time trials. Will report back soon though.
summary - low mileage doesn't mean you cannot run fast.
...wondering what the average 37 woman, in any remote Kenyan village can run? If not, 5:07, betchya pretty damn close! While 5:07 is ok, for anybody average, try to keep a perspective.
Just be content that you are able to be fit and run..have and enjoy it.
That's a soild mile time on 21 miles a week . ! If you ran 40 miles a week maybe you be like 4:50-4:55 ?
Breaking 5 is a nice milestone. If you have not been doing strides or relevant intervals, you might be just a few weeks practice away from it. If your training is well-rounded, you might need to run 25-30 miles per a week for a few weeks. Or if you have any surplus weight (many males at your age do), just drop a couple of pounds and don't change anything else.
That is a good time.
For work, I tested about 2500 “basically fit” people... 75% men.... close to 20 miles per week of activity. If I recall correctly, a 5:05 would have been about 8th place on that list. Very few of the 2500 were “runners.”
Your age is still a non-factor. Not much of a slow down for a non-elite, yet still fit, 37 y/o aiming for 5:05. Your VO2 Max wouldn’t have fallen off the cliff yet. A good amount of dudes (3-5% maybe) your age could get themselves to 5:05 if their body composition was ideal and they worked at it intelligently on a regular basis.
I do not include thick dudes in that 3-5%, or mechanically uncoordinated folks. They would be DOA for this discussion.
You are pretty fit.
I ran my fastest in my late 20s. 4:32 was my mile pb and 2:01.50 was my 800m pr. When I ran the 5:05 a couple of days ago I ran a negative split 2:38/2:26 and I ran alone. If i had Pacers or was in a race situation I could have easily broken 5:00. It's cool that you tan so fast. I'd be interested in seeing your garmin or strava stats for your recent runs.
Ran ..... not tan
With that PR, 5:05 is pretty slow at your age.
sub 4:40 would be good wrote:

Summary: You have one-upped the OP.
