It was pointed out in the 2021 jobs thread, correctly so, that the NAIA used to be pretty dang good, if not comparable to D2. Not so much now. Not even competitive depth wise to D3. It’s basically small college with some scholarships at this point. The NCAA, all divisions, has long since surpassed NAIA.
I personally think the problem with the NAIA is that they (the organizational governing body) has tried to damn hard to be be D2, but just ends up being a crappy version. Competitive rule book (literally uses the NCAA rulebook), tying up resources into eligibility center, etc...
Seems to me the solution to a competitive standpoint is this: eligibility criteria be damned. Basically be JUCO but four year. Let the colleges determine if they want to have someone that doesn’t pass classes representing the university. Academic progress and integrity seems to already be addressed in the accreditation realm. Eliminate financial overhead at the national office and trim ALL the fat. Maybe I’m missing some unintended consequences, but this sure as heck would open up some possibilities for some hyper competitive folks that otherwise don’t meet eligibility criteria.
Or maybe the NAIA just keeps trying to be something it isn’t and continues to die a slow death. Am I off base?
