Define "false positive." Do you mean contamination in the sample? Do you mean sub-infectious RNA quantities (in theory)? Do you mean pre/post symptomatic?
False positive is being thrown around a lot but for RT-PCR it's very hard to have a "false positive" in the sense of detecting viral RNA that is not actually there.
Ray: "What I object to is all those experts who claim there is no risk of COVID for a 28 year old athlete."
This is a good point. I'm more of a nordic skiing nerd, but just off the top of my head, Jennie Öberg and Sergei Ustiugov come to mind. Öberg got Covid in March. She was hospitalized for multiple days, released, and ultimately retired from professional skiing. Ustiugov got it a training camp in October. He hasn't been hospitalized (so far as I know), but he's still not back to normal training.
Öberg is 30. She has a World Cup win to her name, and until recently was a member of the Swedish National Team. Ustiugov is 28. He won five medals at 2017 World Champs in Lahti (plus WSC relay medals in '13 and '19), was 2nd in the 2017 overall World Cup standings, and has four podium finishes in the Tour de Ski.
These are world-class, professional athletes who have medalled at the highest levels of their sport. And it absolutely affected them. It ended Öberg's career, and it remains to be seen if it ended Ustiugov's. I'm as guilty as anyone of reading through stories about athletes who were badly affected and trying to find ways to distinguish their situation from mine ("look at that Ironman triathlete, he's much fatter than I am") - but the only distinction I can draw with cases like this is that they are younger than me and in far better shape than me. Which is scary.
Imagine those athletes spending time with their loved ones this Christmas.

Why would they do that?
Jennie Oberg appears to have won a world cup sprint out of the blue in 2015, other than that she was bottom top hundred and going nowhere. If I was 31, going nowhere, and looking at regaining form after a heavy illness, i would have a good hard look at my life - especially in Nordic skiing - a super hard discipline and ridiculously doped.
It looks like she had a great time competing at the highest level but now has other ambitions - good luck to her, but i dont see her as a covid failure - i see her as a serious illness reset, like any really nasty bout of ILI, or a serious injury. And she is Swedish, where, as we know, covid never happened.
I also noticed she is stunningly good looking.

Sorry guy all this is relatively knew even testing research etc. but logically if your community has a high level of spread it’s going to effect if schools in that community are open or stay open. If students are being directed to test (eg kids are sent home sick and required to test) and tests are positive they’re going to shut it down. I’m sure each state varies though but if there’s more spread in your community it’s going to effect if kids are in school or not. Think about it.
Ah...gotcha. So in other words, there is no evidence that schools are driving the spread of this since, as the CDC acknowledged but is now afraid to admit, there isn't really any evidence that asymptomatic spread is even a thing. But yeah, I should probably "think about it". F off.

No. The Marathon Project cannot disclose the name of the runner who tested positive unless they want to get sued. That is a ridiculous thing to say. They did the right thing by telling runners they came or potentially came in contact with a positive case but it is 100% up to the positive runner to disclose his or her identity.
Not ridiculous at all. Legally, I don't think they can. Not sure HIPA rules apply to private individuals. But, with the athletes permission they can certainly notify individuals. Would you want to know if the guy you flew with, rode next to on the shuttle, shared a room with, ran stride for stride with for 2 hours and then warmed down with, ate dinner with and rode back to the airport next to, tested positive? Or maybe it was just the guy yelling splits at the 5 mile mark? I would think there's a huge difference and I would want to know. Regardless, all athletes should get tested again upon return home. And then where do those results go? For example, do we have any idea how many of the 800-900 athletes at the OT in Atlanta had symptoms within 10-14 days? If so, was there any impact on themselves or others? What type? With the Marathon Project, we have a situation here which allows for a fairly important study as far as the future of smaller elite only races. It would be a shame to waste the opportunity. Get a waiver from all athletes and officials and do the research!
I like the 20-25% of weekly mileage approach.
An easy way to operationalize this is simply to make your long run roughly double your average day's running.
e.g. If I'm running 8 miles a day, I do 16 on Sunday. Total of 64 miles, with 25% as the long run.
If you are want to do 80 miles per week, 10 per day and 20 on Sunday will get you there.
Etc.

Unless there's some quirk I'm missing here, HIPAA would not apply to the Marathon Project. (I get very eye rolly when a race claims it can't disclose information due to HIPAA). In general, running races are not covered entities under HIPAA.
There are good reasons not to disclose the name of the person who tested positive, and I agree with that decision. Protecting the information is not mandated by HIPAA, though.
Browski... F off? What are you even talking about? It depends on the state but in the state I’m in there’s no evidence right now (knock on wood) that spread is happening in schools (likely since they’re super strict with mitigation strategies). But if they have students that test positive the cdc will make them shut it down and this occurs as students contract covid outside of schools (communities/family gatherings etc). But again it depends on the state... listen if you don’t know what your talking about don’t be so freakin rude.
I appreciate what Rosario wrote that they quickly identified close contacts and instructed them on recommendations. Right now I’m some areas businesses are having to contact trace independently...I think race directors just need to be aware that they may have/have a responsibility moving forward to do this right now until spread is under more control.

It may be unlikely, but long term problems are a reality. Look no farther than UF's Keyontae Johnson, who collapsed, was in critical condition, and could very well have died from myocarditis complications - likely a result of a previous mild covid infection.
Another example of ignorance and irresponsible reporting by the fear mongering media. Johnson's hear condition may very well have been genetic and even while tested during physical exams, showed no risk to consider further diagnostics to investigate / diagnose. Unfortunately black men are more predisposed to sudden cardiac arrest and death than white. His heart inflammation could have been brought on my multiple other circumstances and health issues. Once again the media demonstrates ignorance beyond.
My PT caught covid in March. Now he has some pretty extreme health problems. Heart and lung especially
Did the person who tested positive fly to the event? Did all these athletes fly home?
Did they charter private jets for all these athletes or were they all stuffed in planes then told to run in a pack and breathe heavily next to each other?
No. YOU said "our schools are directly linked to this". YOU are the type of person driving schools to be shut down. YOU are the typical fearmonger who thinks because you feel something should be true that it is. The fact of the matter is that there is no evidence that schools should be closed because there is no evidence that spread is happening in schools. It doesn't depend on the state. Your mindset is absolutely destroying a generation of kids. But you get to sit on your high horse lecturing us about precautions and not being rude. You people are seriously the worst. And on top of it, you'll never admit that you were wrong.
I love when people say this. The spread isn't under control and hasn't been at any point. Viruses do what viruses do.
Anyone who thinks it's realistic to "contain" a highly contagious virus in a country of 330+ million people - which also happens to be the economic hub of the planet - doesn't know what they're talking about.
Once we accept that, we can move on from this ridiculousness and get back to normal. The only caveat being an added virus we deal with each year on top of the hundreds of others.

Young and healthy, how about don't worry about it? If you are an old codger, stay away. This is nothing but more governmental red tape and intrusion into everyone's lives.
Hey, I'm an old codger of 81 and have run nine or ten races this year, mostly 15Ks and half marathons, mostly 9 minute miles. The idea that racing is more dangerous than staying indoors sniffling and drooling into a mask is simply nuts.
