I like Des but don't get the quote. If you are providing public commentary you aren't talking behind anyone's back. That means you say things in private and hope no one hears it. She was talking during a broadcast.
What am I missing?

Yo autistic kid, why would you say things and "hope no one hears it"? In fact, talking behind someone's back is expressing something you feel about someone to someone else that you'd be uncomfortable saying directly to the first person at a time and place when that person can't hear you saying it in the moment. It's not that you don't want them to know how you feel, in fact the person saying it often wants it to get back to the person they're talking about, it's that you know it's rude to say it to their face and you rightly fear the consequences of doing so. It's a cheeky way of phrasing what broadcast commentary is about, she's talking about people in an honest way who can't respond directly when she's saying it.
Did anyone else think Linden was a horrendous color commentator? Zero personality. She made me miss Carrie Tollefson.

Nope, you're alone in that opinion, quite the opposite. She did an outstanding job this morning (as was the consensus on the live thread).

Definitely agree, but then I like restrained yet knowledgeable. Tollefson is bubbly yet often shrill and vapid as a commentator, though she remains easy on the eyes I can't really enjoy her podcast. Some people want a rah-rah pump-me-up color commentary, but that befits ball sports more than distance running.
to race at the level she has I would have to think you have to be a little arrogant? It's like nerdy runners are terrified of the rest of the world to become running fans so they bash any personality our sport might have . Problem is, the sport doesn't grow... OMG one of our athletes is arrogant. Has confidence, talks like it. That's awful. Look at all the popular growing sports thats what grows the sport, not a boring nerd who participates in an event three times a year and gives boring interviews.
You guys are ridiculous. It was a funny quote. Stop being such snowflakes! ?

The strange part i see here is that Des Linden is far less "arrogant" than Desiree Davila ever was.
The younger Davila was more outspoken, partially because I think her marrying laid-back Ryan did mellow her out.
But I don't see the issue. Linden is from Chula Vista. People from San Diego County or neighboring cities are generally very vocal about most things (see: Jason Karp and Josh Cox as well) and we/they don't feel the need to apologize for it.
I lived in San Diego most of my life...I think Desiree represents us well.
Jason Karp....now there's a top-notch douche right there.
It’s called a joke.
Some of you must be out of your minds the way you’re over analyzing it.
Des is one of the few people involved with professional running who is actually interesting and has a decent personality. I look at the backhanded a-hole comment about Sara Hall and the other ladies from Kara Goucher, who is obviously a complete narcissist and attention seeker, then thank the gods we have Des.
Met her at a Diamondbacks game.
She threw out the first ball and sat in my row.
It was great to meet her. She did a great job as commentator at yesterday’s race.
Agreed.
Des has always been a tongue -in-cheek speaker ever since she burst onto the big stage.
If anyone read the article from (oh no) Runners World years ago, before she actually married Ryan Linden, they would realize that this is Des, and there's nothing to sweat.
Truth

That's called arrogance boys. Cocky as all get out.
Your posts are pretty arrogant actually
Her quote is the very premise of this website. It’s TMZ for bitter and sarcastic runners. And we love it don’t we?

What makes that arrogant? It's more self-effacing than anything.
Arrogance personified. I have ZERO against her personally, and yes I've met her....another human being in the grand scheme of what is really important in life. But some people like to think up little sayings and act "all that"---that was not a spontaneous thing. You've got your opinion and I've got mine. She's arrogant.
Sounds like Sarah is the one suffering from some form of psychosis.

"Linden is from Chula Vista. Pretty much the same anywhere.
"I lived in San Diego most of my life...I think Desiree represents us well." Most of your life? Represents us well? Again, What are you even talking about?
Hmmmmm??? Des is a talented runner and is confident to speak her mind and share her opinion. No major breakthrough there.
On another note-
The TV broadcast of the race was terrible! Des was ok at best and the other dude was equally average. Bernard Lagat was absolutely a train wreck. He's been living in the U.S. for well over 20 years and he sounded as though he just moved here from Kenya. You could barely understand him. Also, there was very little mention of splits and distance during the coverage. Especially with Sara chasing the AR and Martin running an amazing PR, you never knew until the last mile or so of how well they were doing. Absolutley no build-up. Otherwise a great race and much credit to the race organizers for putting on a solid event.
"Go Run One"
Awesome!
Dry, dark humor is the best!
I'm not sure why you commented at me if your purpose was to throw shade at Des.
My points still ring true about Des and San Diego.

Thank you for the link. I did not learn anything new, but confirmation is appreciated. I note there seem to be many district attorneys who fit in category 3.
who?
