Congratulations to Jenna, amazing completely legitimate performance. Kind of ironic that it was also mostly a solo time trial in a goofy race very similar to Tuohy's run. Clearly both could have gone faster in true competitive races. I hope Jenna gets a normal sr year of xc and track, so she can take a shot at the traditional championships!
Let's not be so hasty to bury Cain and Tuohy. Cain did go on to win a World Jr 3k, a couple US adult women's 1500 and mile championships, and made the World Championship women's 1500 final. (Then she went away, lol).
Tuohy never went away. That 15:37 5k her sophomore year was the only track 5k she ever ran. After that race she went on to win 2 more NXN titles, numerous New Balance indoor and outdoor championships, set various national records at 1500, mile, 3000, 2mile and won 5 Gatorade awards. During grades 10-12, she only lost one race at distances over 800m. Yes, that all came after the 5k! Meanwhile she is busy training at NC State not that far away from the Five and Dime meet for her freshman year of xc and track. An admittedly goofy freshman year like most people's 2020, but she hasn't disappeared and is eager to compete when NCAA competition resumes.
So let's just appreciate the 2020 greats Hutchins, Thorvaldson and Brown, without belittling their predecessors.
