Finally, the dark side of Gallowalking is revealed: the practice of walking through water stops can lead to overhydration (hyponatremia) and possible death. In the (quite good) article by Amby Burfoot in yesterday's RWOL, he first mentions that elite runners rarely suffer this condition since they are running too fast to overconsume water, then goes on to state that slower runners spend 4-6 hours on the course, where "they have the opportunity to drink copiously at water stops, where they walk or stop entirely." Wasn't that Galloway just last week proclaiming the merits of walking through water stops, even for elite athletes?
