For what?
Probably the best all around upper body conditioner for a distance runner. You can modify them by starting on your knees and advancing to one armers-like Rocky. Do fingertipers for hand and finger strength. They work your core too. Vary the width to hit different muscles. Good stuff! :)
They hurt my wrists. A lot.
Hershel Walker only did push ups, sit ups, and pull ups. He was pretty buff. I think they can work just fine.

I though the same too... but also for any lady who wants to flaunt what she's got.
Pushups are great, a must, go until ya can't.
they're good for you, but bench pressing once a week > daily pushups if you have access to a gym
i feel similarly about other calisthenic "core" exercises vs. heavy weights that work similar muscles

Buy the "perfect push up" device for $20, it works.

Those are for weakbodies .. do them on your knuckles ...
As a runner, if you can't do 20 of them, it's a weakness in your armour. But getting from 20 up to 50 or 100 will not make you run faster.
A full body program is Push, Pull, Hinge, Squat, Carry. So they are a useful 20% of what you need.
They are easy to do time wise and give you all round strength which helps your running.

If any man can only do 20 pushups ... thats extremely weak sauce. Runner types should be able to crank at least 75-100
