It sounds extremely planned. They were planning on trying after the 2020 Olympics and now she doesn't have to give up any races or income for a year after the Olympics. The article I read said after NYC and Berlin and all the fall marathons were canceled, she decided to give it two ovulations and then would go back on birth control if it didn't work out in time.
I think she knows what she's doing and knows herself. Without races she wouldn't be motivated, so why not fit this in and go balls out on the schedule. I think pros end up overtraining anyway and retirees seem to look back and say it's better to undertrain than be burned out. She may get a good performance after giving birth—didn't Gwen Jorgensen wow people in the 10,000 about 6 months after giving birth? And now she's super motivated to prove the naysayers wrong as well as not having to wait on something she really wanted. Also she gets a super good story line now cause she was overshadowed at the trials by a barista running for the first time (!)

No, of course they don't??? LOL. If you don't understand the difference in support for an Olympian than a non-professional runner, then I am not sure what to tell you , Recovery will be much quicker with the support they have, no question about it.
Go down the list of every US woman who has given birth in the past 10 years and look how often they are ready to roll. in 6 months.. Some do make it back quickly. Most don't. And months do matter a bit.
How could you have let this happen? They know what causes it. The fastest sperm wins.
The real message is, you can’t have a baby until you qualify for the Olympic trials in your 30s.. real relatable?!
The real story is that her partner Tim Gannon is 55! I raced that guy on the Road Racing Circuit when we whored around the country for a few hundred here and a few hundred there in the 90's. He wasn't half bad either, always seemed to pull in some beer money. No real money to be made in the 90's. Anyway, congrats to Tim and Aliphine!

Jesus, dude will be pushing 80 when their kids are graduating from high school!
Six months is plenty of time. I've gone from totally out of shape to the best shape in my life in 4- 6 months on a couple different occasions.

Such a fluke team we’re sending to Sapporo. Should probly have a new trials race in 2021 or just send Sara Hall, Sisson, and I guess Seidel

Yup, I see what you did there. Take both African-born women off the team they earned, and replace them with your favorite white girls who DNFed at the Trials.
Congratulations Ali and Tim. Best wishes for a healthy baby. I'm proud to have you and Sally representing us. Immigrants are Americans too, maybe doublely so because they choose to be here. They're not just here by accident, like you.

Some women run better after giving birth, it's kind of like blood boosting...
I have always heard that, but I don't think they mean running the biggest race of your life 6 months after giving birth. With that said, women respond to pregnancy differently, some women gain only about 15 pounds, they are active to some extent literally days before giving birth and right back at it days afterwards. Btw, women who are smaller tend to gain more weight. The deal is, if she does gain a lot of weight and/or has a c-section, it is game- over. - I wish the U.S. had a 'show fitness' clause. I remember one year we sent a hobbled Ritz to a global championship and he could not ever finish the race.
unfortunately this news just provides another excuse to wallow in the pity that the US doesn't get to send the women who have had good races recently (hall and sisson). baby or no baby, there's just no way to know how she'll perform in July
Are they the best when they don't even finish when it counts?
The Trials is the best and fairest way to determine who gets to go to the Olympics. It's just this weird year with a pandemic when it might be questionable. But isn't everything in 2020?

How about no planning!
Clearly a mistake. One too many cocktails during date night. When she saw that "positive" on the dipstick she punched her hubby in the mouth.
Hopefully, she'll be ok but it's going to be stressful 6 months of training. Absolutely NOTHING can go wrong....no setbacks whatsoever. Her biggest challenge will be not to over-train to make up for the lack of buildup.
Good Luck!

Unless you know something we don't know about "hull n oates", wtf are you saying? Did I miss the racist over-tone in the post? Because two of the women are black? Both of whom were not favorites to make the team and the third was running her first marathon? Yeah, it is kinda a "fluke" team, but not in a bad way. I'm all for the current qualifiers, great runners who earned their spots far and square no matter where they're from. The dream team of Hall, Sisson, and whoever else (Linden?) didn't show up and choked. I do think your "doublely" (not quite sure what that is) comment with regard to immigrants is idiotic as well as your "They're not just here by accident" is even more idiotic. That being said, I'm a big believer in "proving" some form of fitness prior to the games. Nothing crazy, just an indicator of being prepared to race. If Ali and Tim consciously planned this (I don't think they did), not a smart move on any level. There's way too much risk.
Best of Luck to Team USA!!!

I don't think this is the same Tim Gannon.

Hall and Sisson had fine races leading into the OT, too, that's why so many hyped them to make the team. And they crapped the bed when it was a clear requirement to perform when it counted. Not champion material, there was no way to know how they'd perform on February 29, 2020 and there's no way to know how they'd perform on any other given date.

Subtle.
If she's got 6+ months between birth and race day she'll be absolutely fine. Will probably be faster than without a pregnancy.
Because if we were hand picking a team based on proven quality, it's actually the white woman who wouldn't make it. We're talking about probably the best road racer in the US and an Olympic Silver medalist. Before the Trials, you'd have been an idiot if you didn't have Aliphine in your first tier of likely qualifiers. You could maybe get a pass for leaving out Sally because she hasn't done a lot lately, but she undeniably has the talent (and if you were paying close attention, you'd have known that her Berlin race was a workout, which meant she was more serious about running than she'd been in a while).
This is exactly the point. Hall and Sisson are not dream team material by any objective measure. They are solid runners who had a decent shot at the team, but they are objectively inferior runners to Aliphine and Sally. Which raises the question why they're getting all the attention. Des I'll give you a pass on for sentimental reasons.
Incidentally, I'm right of center, hate identity politics, and am generally very un-woke. But even I think what's going on here is pretty obvious.
