I thought Letsrun was against cheating. Why are they selling t-shirts celebrating a performance done by cheating and breaking the rules? Honest question. Even Kipchoge’s Wikipedia says he broke the rules to do it.

Wasn't it a performance event and they made that really clear?

Yes, they did, but it’s still wrong to celebrate a performance that broke rules. This should not be celebrated anymore than someone who set a record and was caught doping. INEOS could have just as well set up the event to not break any rules and break 2 hrs.

Rules are oftentimes arbitrary. Why are pacers allowed? Why isn’t a point to point course allowed? Why are cars and bikes allowed to be in front of the first place runner in major marathons? If we’re being purists here let’s run barefoot, unsupported, with no pacers, and on trails.
The INEOS took some liberties on a few rules to just get it done and they did. They deliberately did not say this was a world record attempt.
I agree that the T-shirt is stupid and hypocritical. I wouldn't necessarily call it "cheating" in the sense that if you ran a downhill mile in 3:30, it wouldn't be "cheating" unless you said it was an actual mile WR. I'd call it illegal. But either way, I agree that it is dumb to celebrate a time that shouldn't, and doesn't, count. Treating it like a legit time just adds to the travesty of the fact that Kipchoge has effectively stolen the glory of the first person to run a legitimate sub-2 (if it ever happens).
It’s being a hypocrit for Letsrun to say doping is bad but then celebrate a performance that also broke rules. The rules are their to uphold fair sport regardless of opinion and if they are arbitrary.
I think doping is very different.
I don't know everything about the INEOS event but I know they essentially tried to create the very best conditions, even down to routing it by plants/trees if I remember rightly.
Making the conditions the very best just simply isn't the same as doping.
It may not be within the spirit of competition in a way, but it isn't doping.
It isn't like they did a cocaine mile or something and then put it on a T shirt.
It's not doing, but it's not a legal record anyways. Sure, the rules may be arbitrary sometimes, but that's what we've agreed on.
You can make the conditions as good as possible, but as soon as you add rotating pacers or anything that's not allowed by the rules, it becomes an invalid attempt.
The WR shirt should say 2:01:39, because that is the world record. INEOS broke the rules, and while it's not cheating, it's not eligible for a record.
It's not doping*
I thought they did this to celebrate the two people that bought the $99 memberships?
Not only did they change the rules, they couldn't even follow their own rules. Eliud stepped off the course and ran short. And that is a rule you cannot break and celebrate, as there is nothing to celebrate.

It didn't "bread rules, it simply doesn't qualify to be an official marathon records. A FKT on a point to point course wouldn't qualify for a record either, but it doesn't "break rules".
