I am a native Californian. I grew up mostly in San Diego. Ran in La Jolla/PB a lot. Ran many races in California.
If I were living in California, I would understand why races are not happening. Runners are not guaranteed to not be carriers of Covid just because they are runners.
So here you have a race, say, the La Jolla Half....
If I were still living in San Marcos (I live in TN now...not much better here and no racing), I 'd be living my life in SM, this person in Oceanside, this person in Imperial Beach, this person in Palm Desert, this person in Riverside, this person in Encino, this person visiting from Las Vegas, NV, etc etc across the country...all convening and bringing my and their germ baggage and potential illness (though asymptomatic) to the start line where it's essentially a herd even if people are corralled.
Then the race starts and you're always going to be tangential to anyone's slipstream or you will be breathing forward near someone. Sweat, spit, lather, rinse, repeat.
Need a drink? At mile 5, you may grab your Gatorade or Exceed or whatever drink is served and two volunteers at mile 5 are asymptomatic Covid carriers.
Now you have hydration plus an unwanted friend.
Congratulations! You finished and placed well....now you get your replenishment along with 200 other potential carriers who finished before or after you.
Then maybe a week later, you wonder why..if the race ended a week ago, you struggle with a lap around the track.
Then you realize that you were with 10 friends last night.
You soon positive and wonder how many friends you gave it too.
Then one of their asthmatic relatives gets it from contact with a friend of yours. You are the only positive tested person that the friend was with before seeing that relative......
Lather, Rinse, Cry, Repeat.
This is why there are no races.
