Does anyone know how the contest was held? Was it just one round of voting? How did it work?
Here are their results
The Greatest Female Athlete
1 Tirunesh Dibaba – 31.1%
2 Fanny Blankers-Koen – 25.7%
3 Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce – 18.9%
I'm just surprised that Jackie-Joyner Kersee isn't at least in the top 3. I saw this article and after finishing it turned to John Kellogg and said, "Who is the greatest track athlete ever for women?" He said, "Jackie Joyner Kersee." When I then said, "What about Dibaba?" He said "Oh yeah, she's pretty and good two and won more medals."
Let's compare the two.
Both won 3 Olympic golds, but Kersee is still the WR holder in the heptathlon 32 years later. In fact, she is the holder of the 6 best heptathlons in history. In the long jump, she is the holder of the #2 and #3 marks in history.
Both won 6 Olympic medals but Kersee gets a slight edge with 1 silver and 2 bronzes versus bronzes for Dibaba.
Kersee won 4 WC golds, Dibaba won 5 but there was a Worlds every 2 years when Dibaba was competing.
Where Dibaba has a big edge is in non track stuff. Dibaba has also won 5 world xc titles and a world marathon major.
