We have an editorial linked to on the homepage where Becca Peter (USATF activist, founder of Polevaultpower and Women's Decathlon Association and friend of LetsRun) urges everyone who can vote at the USATF convention to vote "No" on the proposal that would give the Board of Directors ultimate authority over USATF's bylaws.
Currently, the Law and Legislative committee and thus the USATF members can make changes to the USATF Bylaws. The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) wants this changed saying it is not best corporate governance structure and even has made vague threats to possibly decertifying USATF if this isn't eventually changed.
Becca says the members of USATF should not give up this power and I agree. The Board of Directors at USATF does not need more power. The way I see it the Board has made many questionable decisions during the last decade that the membership has had to overturn. The Board despite overwhelming opposition from the membership wanted Stephanie Hightower to be the IAAF representative, it pushed out Vin Lananna on questionable grounds, and even hired a former member to be CEO. How can giving up bylaw oversight to the Board be a good thing for USATF? The Board has already shown it does not have the proper respect for the membership it ultimately should be serving.
I asked Becca if she'd be willing to answer your questions about the USATF Annual Meeting and she said she would. So she'll answer some of your questions here. And if you think Becca is way off base, let us know as well but too me it seems like a no brainer to vote no on this.
USATF maybe be dyfunctional, but giving the Board, which has been the cause of much of the dysfunction in my view more power, doesn't seem to be the problem.
