Is it mandatory? How much strength training is necessary? How long per session? How many days per week?

Depends on a lot of factors. Some runners are naturally strong. Some runners need to do lots of strength work.

Don't know enough, such as your age, your gender, your background, body type, etc.
So...generally, one good day in the gym, to include core work, and water running if your gym has a pool.
You decide whether it should be 1 day every week, every two weeks, or twice a week.
A lot. I wish I had access to and did this in high school:
A few years ago, I ran mid 19 5k whileI was underweight.
I stopped running shortly after because I hurt my Achilles. I started lifting and running eventually. Maybe 50%-75% of previous mileage. No longer underweight, but still skinny.
Ran mid 18 5k at heavier weight with muscles. This was a year from the mid 19 5k race.
Achilles injury is gone; I think lifting weights helped me get over this injury. Other stuff too, but getting functional strength was really good.
I think lifting weights can be VERY helpful to the really thin runners.

2-3% plus whatever benefit you get from not getting injuried. I am sure there are some super responnders who get more benefit and some underresponders who get less. And there is definitely a bunch of people who improve 2-3% by running another 2 hours/week instead of doing strength training.

I am pretty sure the strength training we did in HS. (basically a circuit around a machine doing lat pull downs, bench, military press, and some hamstring curls and extensions) was almost useless.:) Oh well it was the 80s:)
