Yeah, "Regional" is relevant to other sports and doesn't mean "Sectional." I first read it to mean all Section meets were cancelled, but that's not the case as the other poster pointed out. Sections are still on at the moment. In fact, that's the stated reason for this: by cancelling the State meet, there will be more time to have a fuller season for more schools and ending in Section meets, rather than rushing through Sections to State.

Regarding Invitationals, right now some big ones like Clovis, Mt SAC and Woodbridge are still scheduled, but you're right that it seems unlikely that those will be held. We'll see.

This sounds like Oregon's plan - a seven week competition season with no district or state meet. Just, however many meets you can find in that designated period.

You will not have sports without students in class. Not one public high school is back on campus with 100% of students. The entire state is in distance learning. There will not be sports this school year.

Why is this an issue? Outdoor sports can be done safely and should be done. In Michigan we conducted our fall season with several schools being online only.

We're all just speculating, but my guess is that "Indoor?" is right that schools being 100% back is not the threshold for school sports in California. CIF certainly isn't rolling that way, but ultimately it's up to the State and local counties of course. If some handle on the latest covid surge is achieved, I think we'll end up seeing school sports back in California despite online classes but only on a very local (or possibly Sectional) level even if some schools choose not to participate. We'll see though. For what it's worth, I've been told that our Section is considering each sport independently so it's possible that cross country can go forward in some limited way even if a sport like football can't, given the differences in numbers, contact, proximity, etc. Again, we'll see.

It’s an issue because school boards & principals I have a real issue with large groups bring allowed to play a sport on campus but students are not allowed on campus to learn. As an administrator sports are extra curricular and no doubt an important piece of school culture but honestly it’s at the bottom of the priority pile.

With the money invested into distance learning do not expect schools to return to on campus learning this school year.

I also expect it to go this way. It might seem logical to us that outdoor sports could happen in some capacity while in person classes are not, since the outdoor sports are lower risk. However, the districts don't look at it that way. Instead they look at it as learning is the top priority. Outdoor sports might be lower risk, but they aren't zero risk, so they won't be added until in person learning is deemed acceptable. If you can't have your number one priority, you can't have anything else if it carries any risk at all.

Its especially frustrating for xc and track. Theyre two of the least risky sports possible (baseball/softball also seem extra low risk compared to basketball, wrestling, football, etc where close proximity can't be avoided).

Exactly. Students are guaranteed an education by state constitution, not sports. Administration is worried about hot spots, accessibility and equitable learning experience.

Most, if not all public districts in CA have committed to distance learning in the spring. Many universities have canceled their sports seasons. Junior Colleges are planning for fall classes in 2021 to be online. While there may be a return faster if numbers drop, currently it’s the worst it’s been. And it won’t magically get better in a few weeks to start in January.

It is frustrating indeed but understand there are enormous barriers to return. Even if the state gives the OK it has to clear county health & the school district. This requires cleaning protocols and opens up a nightmare with transportation under current CDC guidelines. Sports are a nightmare right now and I hate to say it but districts will save a lot of headaches and lots of money by not fielding sports this year.

And you may not feel this way but I can tell you, for every sport parent there’s two who for whatever reason feel sports are a distraction snd have no place in education.

As I said there’s many barriers to overcome.

I don't disagree with anything several of you have said about what many admins are thinking, but many public schools in my area are practicing already and have been for a while. As are private schools. That's football, cross country and field hockey that I've personally seen at some public schools for weeks and weeks. All these schools are still 100% remote in terms of classes. And I'm not just talking about one outlier school. So if they're practicing, they're going to want to play (if allowed). In my section, I'm hearing that some leagues, let alone schools, are much less likely to want to play any sport than others, for the reasons that have been said. That doesn't prevent sports from happening if government rules allow it, it just may be much more league by league or school by school even with a section.
