I know I'm late but I had a chance to speak to a few people about the situation at the school. Calling it a soap opera would be an understatement. There's a lot that I'll leave out as I don't want to share information that I can't verify but just know that it's pretty crazy.
Zavala left after a season (and a few months) for what was described as personal reasons(mental health) but according to a few of the athletes, he wasn't "built for the job". Although you have to take what athletes say with a grain of salt sometimes, I do have to admit that it's a little odd that Zavala had a new job coaching a week or so later it appears.
The previous staff had been together for 8 or 9 years prior to Zavala taking over and after researching a tad, it appears that Zavala and the former csu head coach had once worked together on the same staff while at robert morris. The assistant(now former) who was in charge of sprints, hurdles and jumps was held over when Zavala took over but apparently was let go this summer after one season under Zavala. It wasn't an official firing but not getting a contract renewed is essentially the same thing and is an easy way out in most cases for head coaches and admins. Zavala then stepped down a few months later which didn't sit well with the athletes on the team. Again, grain of salt but a little odd in hindsight.
I was able to confirm that Zavala did indeed want to be closer to home and that why the chicago state job was ideal. Benedictine is a long way from his home and I personally wouldn't want to make that trip every day either. As I said there's more but I'm reluctant to share without being able to confirm. Maybe someone else with the same information would be willing to share but this is all I have.
