I’m gonna keep it short for you guys because I struggled with understanding this too. Connections help you get the job. You can get connections a few ways. 1. Having had a decent running career, 2. Knowing some great runners/coaches, or 3 and most popular is not having 1 or 2 and just going around kissing lots of arse.
The connection whatever is it, helps you GET the position. Depending on the position, your ability to coach helps you keep the job and/or get a higher position. Some cases that doesn’t matter if you’re a certain gender or the program cares less about performance.
You have to be able to hustle as a recruiter, get them on campus and have a personality make them laugh be a real person you’ll land most of them unless the school just isn’t the right fit.
I’ve lost out on many positions to less deserving ppl but you don’t have the player you hate the game. But, in the long run seeing your programs success and their top runner being as good as your 5th, that stuff make those past Ls not feel so bad.
