Anyone have thyroid removal (either full or partial)? I had half my thyroid removed since it was getting large, I did not need to go on any medication after the procedure.
What effect did it have on your running? Should it have any effect?

Are you getting tested regularly? I would think that with 1/2 a thyroid you would need some to be on synthoid.
I had a followup after the procedure, and there was no issue with being forced to go on medication.

How does cutting away part of your thyroid help you if you were gaining weight? Weight gain comes from an underactive thyroid.
I had a total thyroidectomy around a decade ago (because of thyroid cancer). There have been up and down periods but overall, it hasn’t negatively affected my running at all as far as I can tell.
I do have to monitor my levels and t4 dosage regularly and didn’t previously track thyroid levels at all so it’s not clear how much has changed. Really it’s impossible to know for certain so I try not to worry about it.
Partial thyroidectomy might be a different matter, and everyone is a little different so I can’t really say that it will be like that for you. The endocrine system is incredibly complicated, but as long as all your levels are good there’s no reason to assume it would have any significant impact on training.
Wasn't gaining weight, I'm actually very active. Only long distance I do is rucking, any running is 3mi or less, a lot of intervals.
The thyroid was larger than normal so they removed half of it, I agreed since I had already met my deductible for the year and it could eventually cause problems. It was not causing any issues, I was there for an annual checkup and they said it felt big, so they took a picture and then biopsied it. Biopsy was benign.

Oh. That makes sense. I thought your"getting big" referred to body size, not thyroid size. LOL

Probably left half of it to retain your parathyroids. Apparently lots of people have benign nodules on their thyroids, that can be easily palpated or ultrasound imaged. Not a Dr. , so don't know how common it is. Kind of makes me feel that it's another random illness that I've dodged in my 73 years. Wondering just what it is that life is saving up for me!
I removed my thyroid myself at home with a boxcutter two years ago and so far I feel amazing!
