In the 1970s and early 80s Springsteen was an AOR station guy and didn't hit the mainstream until Born in the USA came out. He had one or two minor hits during that period and everyone knew who he was, and he wasn't 'alternative' even back then. Since Born in the USA he has been a grating middle aged liberal scold.
He's been a "liberal scold" his entire life. But he's also an entertainer and the brilliance in timing and playing to the masses with USA was undeniable. Love him or hate him, he epitomizes rock n roll.
