I am a 17 year old male and have a 19:30 5k pr on the track. I have always trained sporadically and never built up an aerobic base (but I have played other sports and am a relatively good athlete). Once covid hit in March, I decided to try to do some sort of base building plan but didn't know what I was doing and got injured. I am finally healed and just finished my XC season. What is the optimal way to build a base in a 6 month timeframe (peaking just before the summer)? Is it just all slow easy miles or should I also do harder workouts or medium intensity workouts (fartlek, tempo, hills)? Should I be doing strength workouts? Neuromuscular workouts? Can I be getting a "burning feeling"/go anaerobic during workouts? Should I even be doing workouts? If so what type? How long should this training block last? Would the typical training week change throughout the timeframe? As you can see, I am clueless on how to proceed with a Lydiard(I think it should be Lydiard styled but correct me if I am wrong) styled aerobic base building block. I want to get really serious with running and I think that if I build my base from now until next spring/summer I will become a much stronger runner. This however requires me to learn how to construct a base building block. I know that this is a lot to ask, but I would really appreciate somebody to take the time to answer these questions and if possible give a sample training week. Many thanks!
