My roommate is a huge stoner and sometimes I smoke weed with him because he likes the company and I like it because it's relaxing. Are my lungs going to hold up as long as I only smoke once or twice a week? I know Bill Rodgers used to smoke packs of cigarettes and still ran 2:09.
first off, once a week won't destroy you, but you might notice a few mild symptoms if you smoke A LOT in each session. also it depends on the method of consumption; blunts or spliffs will mess your lungs up, whereas vaporizers will cause the least amount of harm.
do you live in a legal state? I'd be way more wary of whether the weed you smoke is lab-tested and from a dispensary. black-market stuff isn't tested, may contain mold and pesticides which have the ability to get you real sick - to the point where you won't be able to run for weeks.
if you're that concerned about your health, you and your roommate should invest in a quality vaporizer and consume lab-tested buds.
Smoking weed won't occasionally ruin your lungs. It will kill off little pieces every time until the ruination will be permanent.
Yes. I knew a HSer who went from 9:08 to not able to break 10 in one year. In college our top 800 runner went from 1:48 to not breaking 2. He stopped and took some time but got his form back but had some asthma effects.
I have no issues with recreational use at home, no kids, no driving, etc. But it does effect your running.

Those two runners may have regressed, but it surely wasn't due to smoking weed once a week. You're either uninformed about the totality of their activities or you're willfully repressing important information.

As someone who vapes weed I suggest you don't if you want to maximize your performance as a runner.

It probably doesn’t help, but there’s more to life than just running.
Living by a busy road is probably worse.
There is evidence for it causing harm even if it is done when the child is a foetus.
The effect on children is worse.
Look it up.
Get some edibles if you guys wanna get stoned. Or tinctures, they hit you fast and fvck you up.
Ahh. The Dane Jorn Lauenborg ran 2.12 when he was 39. Smoking 25 cigarettes a day. A lot of excellent runners smoked cigarettes.

Unless you are a troll, if you have to start a thread to ask this, the negative effects of weed have already taken hold on you. I am a former pothead from my high school days...I have not touched it or any other drugs (including alcohol) for 37 years. Trust me, your lungs are not the only thing affected by weed.
pretty much every college runner smokes weed just don't do it all the time man

It was an article in Canadian Medical Association Journal about smoking as an underused tool in long distance training (2010).

And there is a whole lot more to life than getting stoned. Unfortunately, getting stoned can lead to behavior that messes up many of the things that make life worth living. Can't tell you how many people I know that had unplanned pregnancies, dropped out of college or high school, etc. because of stuff they did or didn't do while getting stoned. Now they're broke or dead and I'm a multimillionaire with a hot wife and good kids.
Every person I have ever told be smoking weed is bad never smoked weed.
I smoke a lot. And I am sure I am faster than you. And, never had any negative "lung" issues.

Weed basically doesn't affect my training at all, it helps be get to bed earlier and keep my stress levels low. If I took a particularly hard hit the night before I might have a cough for a couple days, but nothing super disruptive.
If you are worried about the smoking, just buy edibles instead. You'll have to plan out your highs a little more by taking them earlier but it would take lungs out of the equation.
