Neither run the 800m, they run the 5k.
What is necessary is closing a 5k in a 52

Hunter can close a 5k in 52. Chelimo can close a 5k in 53. Hunter has better closing speed. He needs more endurance, not more speed.
That must be why Paul Chelimo’s kick is what got him an Olympic silver medal in the 5k, and why he almost kicked down the best kicker of all time Mo Farah
And Farah says he can't break 52 without a running start. Hunter is faster than almost all other 5k runners.

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever read.
Hunter ran 1:48 in 2018. Could run 1:46 now.

Nonsense. I don't think Hunter can break 1:50 now that he's focusing on the 5k.
If he could run 1:46 he'd have run a lot faster in the 1500 by now. He would be a bigger threat to make the USA team in the 1500 than the 5k.

Grijalva and Hunter are close to the same age and Grijalva is better right now.

Hunter is about 1 and a half year older than Grijalva and is in the midst of a professional career so I think it is natural that people expect more from him!

It is true that Centro was far from his PB when he (and other American top milers, including Engels and Fisher) were beaten easily by 17 years old Jakob in Palo Alto in early May 2018. So in that respect Drew´s 3000m time was much better,
By the way: Jakob´s time in Palo Alto (3:39) was also an early season time since he went on to run 3:52 in the mile shortly after and 8 seconds faster in the 1500m later in the season. So it was no shame for the Americans to lose to the youngster!
You complainers will still be unhappy when he makes the US team because you will say that he could be running even faster under a different coach. You will say that losing to Ingebrigtsen brothers means he has bad coaching. Talen is the ultimate decider. So unless you all are saying the Hunter is the most talented runner in the world, yu should just celebrate his accomplishments.
Nice that a former D3 runner on Letsrun knows more than a pro runner who is on a $1M contract and his pro coach and his high level coach parents.
There is no way to prove any runner reached their potential. Maybe a world record holder was the most underperformed. Nobody knows. Do you tell your doctor and lawyer and mechanic how to do their jobs also? Guessing, yes.

Actually we can with Drew Hunter. He was way better than Grant Fisher in high school. #3 mile in USA high school history.
4.5 years later, Grant has run 13:11 and Drew has only run 13:21. Nobody in their right mind would say Grant is more talented. But he has surpassed Drew, obviously because Tinman is a failure.
Can't make too much of one race. I remember when a runner named Henry Rono ran around 15:43 in a 5k race in June 1981. Then in early September of 1981 he ran 13:06 5k and set a new World Record.
Can make to much of a time trial.

It's not one race. We are assessing his entire career thus far.
Drew's a bit faster than Grant at 1500 and 3000, as well as a lot faster at 800m. Grant just ran that 13:11 this year, while Drew was injured after running that 13:21 and didn't have high quality training partners to do time trials with this year to knock that time down. With Drew in 7:44 shape in November, he is on track to knock that 5000m time down a lot next year. It's true that he hasn't improved as much as one would expect since high school. After all, when he had to scrap the rest of his season, the summer he graduated from hs, Tinman said that if he hadn't had Lyme disease or something like that, he might have come close to Webb's high school record in the mile (3:53.43). As it was, he ran 3:57. But then he was clearly getting great, pro style coaching, coaching that has accelerated the development of many other hs kids in the past year or two. Just look at the Florida kid who almost broke 4 in the mile prior to his junior year. He was able to get that major improvement despite having been a prodigy going back to age 12.
Way better? No. Even so. There are plenty of 9:30 3200 guys who go on to beat guys in college who were running sub 9 in high school. I don't know how you think you know Hunter's potential from what he did at 18. You would be the world's best recruiter if you could do that.

Please please give me an example besides the freaking 2015 brooks pr 2 mile where drew hunter showed he is faster than all other 5k runners. I am talking closing speed in a big race.
It does not matter that it is November. People can peak whenever they want. Drew and others are peaking for the 5k next week. They will have another peak for next summer.
Drew has also been a professional runner for 4.5 years at this point. I expect more than a 13:21. He's incredibly talented.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
