It depends if the homeless person has a dog or not
No dog = $0
With dog = $5

I say sorry. Bitcoin only.
I got into an argument with a panhandler once - he was upset that I only had $1 on me, I told him that if he accepted bitcoin I could give him more. He followed me around for a block or so while I yelled at him for being behind the times and not having a bitcoin wallet, and then he eventually accepted my $1 and said "thanks man I appreciate it".
I usually give then a dollar or two if I have it
I quote verses from the Bible and the Constitution and Ayn Rand condemning the poor, then pop the collar on my LetsRuns MembersOnly Lettermen's jacket and tell them to 'keep it on the 'crete' and continue on my way.
...later, alone in the basement on a Saturday night...I start a "HaZ PandHanling Jamped the ShuRK!?" thread and then another.... "Just saw a cute Ukranian bum checking me out!!!"

wow.. U really pwned that homeless person....i bet you felt AWESOME!!
I hate homeless people. Get a job you lazy bums. This is America, you literally could be rich I'd you wanted, but you have decided to be a slob and be a burden on society.

I usually say something like "hey man" and then give them whatever I have, although never more than $20. I don't know why I have that arbitrary cut-off. Seems reasonable, though.
I must have given pandhandlers, homeless or not, thousands of dollars over the years and my many travels across the US.
But I may adopt your policy, Robert. You seem like a nice guy, admired and loved by friends and family. I hear nothing but good things about you. I'm re-thinking things, based on your post.
While I admire your empathy, your behavior, like most liberal policies that are intended to help, actually do more harm.
I tell em, beat in a 100 meters and I'll buy em dinner. 200 m and I'll pay for the hotel. beat in a mile and I'll give em my house. Have some gonads.

You don’t know their backstory.
I try to give money when I have it. I do t care if they use it for drugs, food, alcohol... it’s now their money not my money.
If you are homeless (and as we see on this thread, looked at as scum), If you feel the need to get high to forget about it for a few hours, so be it.
But either way, the I know for a fact that I am doing financially ok and I’ve certainly “wasted” money on things not nearly as important as being humane.
A dollar bill if I have small bills.
If I give a homeless person $20, and he uses it to buy some booze or drugs, did I do the right thing?

When you give your money away it's not your money anymore. You're not responsible for what the party you gave it to does with it. My favorite all time panhandler was one I saw in Tuscon many years ago who had a sign that said, "I'll be honest. I need money for beer." I always give them something but I made sure to be nice to that guy.
It depends. If I have a buck or two, I give it to them. I don't judge them. There but for the grace of DOG goes I.

I never considered giving money to someone who has none a liberal policy. Maybe it is, but I have never thought of it that way when I'm handing a homeless guy $5. It just doesn't register as having any political connotations or impact to me. If I were to see some stats that it is liberals who predominantly give money to the homeless, I'd consider not doing it any more.
As to "harm, it would really depend on the scope of the term as to whether you are correct. I can't see the harm in giving a homeless guy money. No matter what he does with it, it introduces money into the economy, at a minimum. It promotes capital fluidity, and economic utility.

I agree that I am not responsible with what he does with it.
And yet, some jurisdictions are able to hold a bartender liable if he serves a drink to a customer and that customer kills someone while DWI. Or a gun manufacturer is held responsible for a murder committed with a gun sold by that manufacturer; or a drug company that is sued by someone who took their product (such as an opiod) and then sues the company because he or she became addictated to the drug.
Why should the parties in those cases be liable for what the third party did with something they supplied, but I shouldn't be?

If they don't have a mask on I start screaming for the police to arrest them for exposing me to Covid. If they have a mask on I tell them I can't understand them with the mask and as soon as they take it off I start screaming for the police to arrest them for exposing me to Covid.

Actually only 25% are addicted to substances. 25% have psych issues. 50% would be fine with a little rehab, therapy, and small safety net
