Tim McGowan ran 27:43 on the roads today. Ran it on Harvards famous “tempo loop.” Seems like a legit run, tempo loop is short so hopefully their coach measured it out to make it accurate. US record is 27:48 on a certified course.

That’s crazy. The 10k “pr” listed on his strava was 27:28. The 27:42 was for 6.25 miles. I know Strava isn’t a perfect measuring stick, but I’d like to think that course was pretty accurate & his miles were very consistent. Did he have pacers? -
Did he wear a mask, as required in Maskachusetts?

Not sure what to make of this. I feel like he's been way under the radar since H.S./College. I remember he and his twin brother took a lot of flak on here for going Div III (Rogers) before transferring to Penn state. Last time I saw him run was NCAAs 10K. I thought he was back on Long Island coaching at Hofstra? He, his brother and Mikey Brannigan all came up together at Northport H.S. where all 3 ran under 9:00 for 2 miles in the same friggin race! NBON. This result is a shocker and completely out of the blue for me.

Clearly a short course. The guy running with him ran an extra 200 meters, and that only registered 6.20 miles on his watch. He also claims he went through 5k in 13:37, which is also not true even if you accept his measurements. Why didn't he just do it on that track right next to his loop so he could measure it accurately?

Average HR of 140 suggests he could go a couple of minutes quicker when really pushing himself

Let's analyze the loop he ran, assuming he ran the tangents reasonably, with satellite imagery + Google maps:

I measured 1.157km. He ran 8 loops in 26:55 so that's about 9.68km or about 29:05 10k pace (he actually slowed down the last 250 meters or so).
If he actually ran around the tree in the eastern-most corner you can add another 5m per lap which would make it just under 29' pace. Even if I cut off another 5 to 10 meters of tangents per lap that equates to 28:40 to 50 pace. -

Looks like he coached for a season and now has gone pro with Boston Athletic Association -

is it possible that he didnt cut the tangent next to the baseball field? doubt that would add a significant amount of distance though -

9.68km in 26:55 is 27:48 pace. Seems spot on. The strava segments suggest that the course has been wheeled for accuracy. -
That was a typo, I meant 9.26 not 9.68

It looks like he took this tangent, if you zoom in on this portion and switch to satellite you can see he took the shorter road (although the GPS itself is all over the place which is why it registers a much longer distance) -
Is this legit

Carro ran 27:46 today.
