I'm talking about the general debate about racing in shoes that haven't been released yet and am saying that using pacing lights is similar to that because they aren't available to everyone. I have no idea what shoes she was wearing. I was not making a comment about her shoes.
Got it.
I hope we hear from Coach Hunter in order to gain some insight. I am sure that she is reading all of these posts. The Hunter family all seem like great people.
I think I learned exactly what I want to know. Good luck.

So basically, you find excuses until you come up with a scenario where in your mind, you’re really the winner.
It’s ironic that your obsession with Tuohy is now causing more people not to like her. When they think
of her, they’ll think of her Uncle Rico-like stalker.
I have read through this thread, and while Jenna Hutchins time was impressive, I have to admit I have a hard time getting very excited about it. Between the cross country record and now the 5K it just seems she is chasing records because she wants the attention that KT got. KT was awesome because she was a trail blazer, and because she did not need to race in pristine circumstances to break records. To me, the best part of CC is that you have to run the conditions you are dealt. It's gritty. Fast courses, pacers, pacing lights??? Choosing to race in favorable circumstances that KT did not have I guess counts, but as a huge fan of running I do not feel very excited about it.
You could argue this either way. I am not saying Jenna's performance is not impressive. There is no denying that she is fast. There is just something missing for me when it seems like someone stacked the deck to knock off a name. I do not think Jenna Hutchins is better than KT was, and I also don't think she would beat Sidney Thorvalsdon if they raced each other. Sidney is a much grittier racer. That is just my opinion.
I was way more interested in the CC race between Sidney T. and Brynn Brown a few weeks back.
What could Thorvaldson run on a track then, 15:25?
Yep. People wonder why I am such a fan of Tuohy. Well because I admired her approach to a sport that is in virtually all respects rotten to the core. Just today some stans are celebrating some doped up crazy time run by an obviously EPO fueled runner. Tuohy ran for her team and never engaged in obvious record chasing. She never tried to stack the deck and often sacrificed her own personal self-aggrandizement for her team such as when she essentially gave up the chance to seriously go after Cain's 2 mile record to anchor the DMR earlier in the same meet. And she had no intention of going pro early, which was reflected in her approach.
Hutchins takes a different approach. Hutchins apparently wants to go pro, hired two professional coaches like Cain did and takes what can be described as a "pro" approach: chase records, handpick venues, use every advantage such as pacers and pacing lights. Nothing directly wrong with that, but it does materially change the conditions. It is an attempt to make a name for herself, but it is done in a different spirit and it is stacking the deck. That is ultimately what this sport is known for, and the lengths to which it is done are boundless and have reduced professional international running to a sideshow. It is a different game, and not better one.
As to who would win in a CC race between Hutchins and Thorvaldson, I think it comes down to old fashioned grit.
I would predict the same as I did for Hutchins: 15:32.
Doesn't Sydney have on more track race on the docket?
She seems like a humble person. I wish her the best. I hope she can run some very fast times in track that will get her to the trials which in turn can get her a Hunter type contract.

What is your source for this statement exactly? Because according to her she wants to go to college and isnt thinking about qualifiers or going pro or anything other than her senior year and her college options. Shes stated this several times in recent interviews. Are you saying shes a liar? She doesnt strike me as the type to overbite. She openly says she came into the year just hoping to run faster than last year and never dreamed that she would be breaking records of any kind. She chalks up her success to actually being more rested coming into the season because spring track was cancelled and also focusing on her sleep and nutrition and hydration better. Hardly sounds like a conniving record chaser or whatever you are trying to paint her as. But I guess according to you she should have rejected the idea of running in Huntsville because running that course goes against some non existent dinosaur "running code of ethics" youve made up in your head to make yourself feel better. And by the way if you think Tuohy didnt burn to be the fastest herself than you are in a dream world. Theres nothing wrong with wanting to be the best. And theres nothing wrong with making the best of your opportunities.
People on this board have said that was her plan, that she wanted to go the Drew Hunter route. Personally think that is shortsighted, but people insisted.
I have no inside info on this and will very gladly be wrong. Good in fact.
Plus you make a very valid point about athletes being better rested during Covid. The whole trick is to avoid injury.
Look forward then to seeing her run in college.
I see Bill posted about some speed ratings Kathy Kroeger achieved. I have updated the list of the top speed ratings to include all he listed for her.

Speed Ratings just jumped the shark. The official national record doesn't make the top 40 all-time performance speed ratings list but the runner then also sets the all-time national 5k track record. Maybe that track was all downhill.
How fast will she run this year? I say 9:29/15:25. The 10k is probably her best bet in the trials if she chooses to go that route. Excited to see her break more records.

actually the 167 is tied for 35th :)
As I recall, Bill posted that it is hard to get a high speed rating on an easy course when the whole field runs fast times (for them), and the best runner cannot separate as much.
That is true. However this was a national meet that she won by 1 minute. The 2nd place girl has a 3200 PR of 10:20. The 3rd place girl she beat by more than 1 minute, ran 10:24 indoor last year. I would say that running away from them by 1 minute and running the fastest time in history should result in the top speed rating also. So she had to win by 1:30 and run 15:30 on a XC course to earn the best speed rating? Come on.
I’m curious on why you think the 10k is her best bet. She has decent foot speed (ran 4:42 for a full mile her frosh year when she was much slower in the 5k) and supposedly only runs five days/40 miles a week.
At 16-17 years old, I can’t see her having the necessary aerobic strength to have that be her best event. And with hopefully 10-15 years of high level running left, she can take her time.
Seeing her break 9:30 would be cool and if she does, I think she goes sub 4:30 as well. But with her age, I’d like to see her develop more racing instincts opposed to time trial environments.
She has a short stride and high cadence. She is the poster child for being a grinder who can run close to redline without tiring.
