I live in an “uppity,” mostly liberal, neighborhood. I can’t think of one resident that is significantly overweight or any that smoke.

I live in a very active region but still surrounded by overweight people that need to eat less/better and move more. A big difference in lifestyles here. Throw away the tv and get off your butts and that will help mentally, physically and emotionally. It's hard for people to change their lifestyles after so many years/generations. Especially without good role models ie the 350lb PE teacher/coach.

Draconian? WTF are you talking about. That sounds like a meal for hippos.
I also have a family of four. A typical meal for us is one grape - split four ways. And we ALWAYS have leftovers.

Haha. We split a boiled egg 4 ways in ours. Europe can’t afford grapes.

..and only because we steal them from the Fat f*cks next door.
A pizza is an all in one meal, only a philistine would have a side vegetable with it.
I’ll probably get hated on here but my wife and I are both tall and lean. I’m 6’2” and 195 lbs and she’s 5’10” and 130 lbs. We grew up eating whatever we wanted and we don’t eat particularly healthy foods now either. We let our kids eat a lot of junk food and they are all on the slimmer side as well. I don’t fat shame people in general because I know the reason I’m not fat is sheer luck.

What is largest weight discrepancy between families in your social sphere?
We have to establish some rules here. Are we going to talk about average weight or cumulative weight? For our family, the cumulative weight is going to be well over 1000 lb, while the average weight will be just a bit over 100 lb. Average 5 K time, though, without the 3 youngest children, is 19:31. If we had to get away in a hurry on foot, and put the 3 youngest ones in strollers, we could crack 25:00 in a 5 K - limited by the 44 year-old mother who gave birth to 11 children.
Cost wise, yes, it adds up, they eat a lot, and we need a 15 passenger van to get around, but it is well worth it.

Damn. That's a whole 'nother type of gluttony.
But if you buy two pizzas you also have leftovers for the next day or two

I guess average weight with some sort of control for height is most appropriate. Surely, there is a quant-gifted poster here who could cook up an equation that could address these factors.
I also think that dog weight (controlled for breed, of course) should be factored in as well.

One large pizza plus salad and dessert for everyone does sound like a fair amount of food for a family of four--depending of course on how old the children are. My husband and I (about 182 pounds together) only eat about half of a medium pizza, plus a side vegetable and a small dessert. When we eat pizza, which isn't often.
Cannot tell if you’re joking...182 lbs combined weight? So, assuming he’s not malnourished, you’re a grand total of 50-60 lbs? What are you..4 foot 5in? Why are you on a running site of all places? Runners eat a crap ton. I can personally devour a pizza and a half after a taxing long run. Now, I don’t do that often, but that just illustrates how much runners actually eat. Hope you guys are doing alright and not skin and bone

I have a different experience. Location and demographics play a key role in weight/fitness. When I was at the trials in Des Monies, the contrast between the locals and the fans was stark. The locals out and about were drastically overweight, while it was a mixed bag with the fit, yet older fans in the stadium. The contrast with where I live is even more dramatic. Here (somewhere in CA), with spectacular, mild year round weather, tons of trails and bike routes, the older populace is generally active and hence not nearly as overweight as the Midwest. Curiously, most of the fit people I've encountered (certainly in my neighborhood) are transplants from...the Midwest! Not sure what to make of it?!
Parents, in every sense of the phrase, "set the table" for their kids. Some people just don't know any better, so a bit of kindness goes a long way.
Kindness is useless
